Students of the Federal Polytechnic Bida have raised an urgent alarm over the persistent shortage of electricity within the school premises, a situation they say has thrown their academic and social lives into disarray.
In a formal letter addressed to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), Bida Division, the Students’ Union Government (SUG) expressed deep concern about the prolonged blackout that has plagued the institution for weeks. According to the SUG, while nearby areas continue to enjoy stable power supply, the polytechnic campus has been left in darkness.
“The leadership of the Students’ Union Government wishes to formally express its concern over the persistent shortage of electricity supply within the Polytechnic environment for the past three weeks,” the letter read. “We have observed that while surrounding areas enjoy stable electricity, the Polytechnic environment has been subjected to prolonged blackout.”
The SUG leadership, led by Comrade Isaac Israel (Executive President) and Comrade Aminat Owolabi (General Secretary), stressed that the situation has severely impacted students’ academic activities, research, and overall well-being. With examinations fast approaching, they warned that the continued power outage could hinder adequate preparation and performance.
“We will not sit and watch while our students suffer,” they wrote, calling on AEDC to act swiftly. “Uninterrupted power supply is crucial to facilitate adequate preparation and ensure a conducive learning environment.”
Copies of the grievance letter were also forwarded to the Area Commander and the Dean of Student Affairs, signaling the seriousness of the issue.
As tensions rise on campus, students and staff alike are hoping for immediate intervention to restore stable electricity and prevent further disruption to academic life.
