ASUP Bayelsa Tourism Institute Chapter Concludes Two-Day Research Capacity Workshop

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), International Institute of Tourism and Hospitality (IITH) Chapter, has concluded a two-day capacity building workshop aimed at enhancing the research and supervisory skills of academic staff members.
The workshop focused on four major areas, including project supervision, data analysis, result interpretation, and scholarly publishing, with participants exposed to practical and modern research tools for academic excellence.
Speaking at the opening session, the Rector of the Institute and Chief Host, Professor Apuega Arikawei, highlighted some of the institution’s recent achievements, including the launch of an international conference last year and the establishment of an academic journal now recognised across several higher institutions in Nigeria.
Professor Arikawei stressed the need for the workshop to produce a blueprint for uniform standards and guidelines in project writing and supervision in order to address inconsistencies in research supervision within the institution.
In his welcome address, the ASUP IITH Chapter Chairman, Comrade Akoloh Humphrey, stated that the workshop was organised to bridge the gap between poor project copying practices and proper project writing and supervision.
Several resource persons delivered papers during the workshop on different aspects of academic research and publishing.
Professor K.E. Owede presented a paper titled “Developing Uniform Standards in Project Writing and Supervision in the Polytechnic Setting for the International Institute of Tourism and Hospitality.”
Dr. Newstyle Doutimiareye delivered a presentation on “Modern Research Skills: AI Tools for Data Analysis, Interpretation and Report Presentation,” where participants were introduced to modern digital tools for academic research and reporting.
Also, Professor F.G. Paulley spoke on “Developing Competence in Paper Writing, Article and Academic Publishing for Global Recognition,” while Mr. Odeke Dominion Okalizibe presented a paper titled “Smart Research: Harnessing Data Tools for Data Analysis, Interpretation, Report Preparation and Presentation.”
The workshop provided participants with practical knowledge and strategies aimed at improving the quality of research, supervision, and academic publishing within the polytechnic system.
The Institute reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the capacity of academic staff and promoting a culture of excellence in research, innovation, and scholarship.
