Poly Graduates Push for End to HND–Degree Dichotomy in Nigeria

Calls for the abolition of the long-standing HND vs degree divide in Nigeria have resurfaced, as polytechnic graduates insist that the disparity in recognition continues to limit their career opportunities, employment prospects, and upward mobility in the labour market.

The Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti Alumni Association reiterated this position, stressing the need for urgent education reform to align with global trends that prioritize skills, innovation, and problem-solving over academic titles.

Demand for Equal Opportunities in Nigeria’s Labour Market

Publicity Secretary of the alumni body, Busayo Adeyemi, argued that maintaining the divide between Higher National Diploma (HND) and bachelor’s degree holders undermines Nigeria’s industrial development.

According to him, the Nigerian labour market must evolve to reward competence and creativity instead of preserving outdated hierarchies.

“The Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti, and other polytechnics nationwide should be celebrated. Their graduates are innovators, entrepreneurs, and professionals who deserve equal recognition with their university-trained counterparts,” Adeyemi said.

He noted that many polytechnic graduates have excelled not only in Nigeria but also in developed economies, where their qualifications face no discrimination.

The Legacy and Impact of Polytechnics

Since its establishment in 1977, the Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti, has produced graduates who have become leaders in engineering, business, sciences, and technology. Adeyemi pointed out that polytechnic-trained professionals have consistently contributed to national development and international growth in fields where technical education and practical skills are highly valued.

“Why should Nigeria continue to place HND holders on a lower rung of the employment ladder despite their competence and track record? This divide is driven by outdated policies, not lack of ability,” he added.

Stakeholders Urge Policy Enforcement

The Alumni Association’s position echoes recent calls from polytechnic stakeholders across the country. The Association of Private Polytechnics in Nigeria (APPN) has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to sponsor a bill that would permanently abolish the dichotomy.

APPN President, Dr. Benjamin Achiatar, explained that although the National Council on Establishment had officially removed the divide, weak implementation continues to affect graduates in the workplace.

He noted that the bill passed by the ninth Senate was not signed into law, creating the need for the 10th National Assembly to revisit or reintroduce it for presidential assent.

Why Ending the HND–Degree Divide Matters

Experts argue that abolishing the HND–degree dichotomy would:

  • Promote equity in higher education and employment
  • Encourage more young people to pursue technical and vocational education
  • Strengthen Nigeria’s industrial and entrepreneurial workforce
  • Eliminate discrimination in career advancement and salary structures
  • Align Nigeria with international standards of education policy reform

A Call for Action

For thousands of Nigerian students and graduates, the abolition of the HND–degree divide is not just about recognition, but about securing fair opportunities in a competitive job market. Stakeholders believe that implementing the reform would unlock the full potential of polytechnic graduates, drive youth employment, and accelerate the country’s journey toward industrialization.
