Wesley University Ondo Matriculates 1,112 Students as Admissions Expand Across Nursing, Pharmacy, Law, Engineering

Wesley University, Ondo, has formally admitted 1,112 fresh students into its academic community during its 19th matriculation ceremony for the 2025/2026 academic session, marking another major milestone in the institution’s steady growth and expansion.
The ceremony, held on Friday, January 23, 2026, attracted members of the university management, Senate, parents, guardians, clergy, and other stakeholders who gathered to witness the formal induction of the new students across the institution’s various colleges.
Addressing the matriculants, the Vice-Chancellor, Rt. Revd. Prof. Samuel Sunday Obeka, congratulated the students on behalf of the University Management and Senate, describing the ceremony as both unique and timely in view of Nigeria’s prevailing socio-economic and security challenges. He emphasized that the role of universities goes beyond academic instruction, particularly at a time when the nation is in dire need of moral rebirth and responsible leadership.
Prof. Obeka stressed that the current realities confronting the country make it imperative for higher institutions to intensify their commitment to scriptural holiness, character formation, and social reformation. According to him, this philosophy remains central to the vision and mission of Wesley University.
“If there is any time an institution desires scriptural holiness, social reformation, and character moulding, it is now,” the Vice-Chancellor stated.
He noted that Wesley University provides a holistic learning environment that nurtures students spiritually, morally, and academically, with the aim of producing graduates who are not only intellectually sound but also ethically upright and socially responsible, capable of making meaningful contributions to national development.
Tracing the history of the institution, Prof. Obeka explained that Wesley University was conceived about two decades ago by the Methodist Church Nigeria, originally as a University of Science and Technology. However, in response to societal growth and expanding academic needs, the scope of the institution was broadened, leading to its rebranding as Wesley University, Ondo, with programmes spanning multiple disciplines.
The Vice-Chancellor disclosed that when he assumed office in 2022, the university had a student population of fewer than 500, but the figure has since risen to over 4,000 students, reflecting increased public confidence in the institution’s academic standards and values.
“Today, we are matriculating over 1,112 students across all our colleges,” he announced.
He listed the colleges and programmes to include Arts, Social and Management Sciences, Natural and Applied Sciences, Environmental Design and Management, Agriculture, Food Science and Technology, Nursing, Community Health Sciences, Medical and Allied Health Sciences, Pharmacy, and Law, among others.
Prof. Obeka further revealed that the University Senate has approved plans for the establishment of a Faculty of Engineering and has formally contacted the National Universities Commission for accreditation. He expressed optimism that academic activities in the new faculty would commence in September 2026, a development expected to further strengthen the institution’s academic portfolio and competitiveness.
The matriculation ceremony underscored Wesley University’s commitment to quality education, faith-based values, and continuous institutional development within Nigeria’s higher education landscape.
