US Government Shutdown: Embassy Confirms Visa and Passport Services Will Continue in Nigeria

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has announced that visa and passport services will not be disrupted despite the ongoing partial shutdown of the US government.

In a statement shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the embassy confirmed that scheduled consular services, including visa appointments and passport processing, will continue as planned in Nigeria and at other US embassies worldwide.

Embassy’s Official Statement

The notice explained that while government funding lapses have limited regular updates on its social media platforms, urgent safety and security announcements will still be communicated.

“At this time, scheduled passport and visa services in the United States and at U.S. embassies and consulates overseas will continue during the lapse in appropriations, as the situation permits,” the embassy stated.

Nigerians’ Concerns Over Visa Processing

The update comes as many Nigerians expressed concern that the shutdown in Washington might affect student visa applications, family travel plans, and other consular services. The reassurance is particularly important for students preparing for academic resumption in the United States and individuals with pending visa interviews.

Why the US Government is Shut Down

The shutdown began after US lawmakers and President Donald Trump failed to reach a budget deal. The dispute centers on Democratic Party demands for increased healthcare funding, which Republicans opposed.

As a result, several federal departments and agencies in the United States have temporarily halted operations. However, essential services such as the military, postal service, Social Security, and food stamp programs remain unaffected.

According to the Congressional Budget Office, about 750,000 federal workers risk being placed on unpaid leave daily until Congress and the President agree on a spending plan.

Historical Context

This marks the first government shutdown since the record 35-day closure nearly seven years ago during Trump’s first term. Since 1976, when the modern budget process was introduced, the United States has experienced 21 shutdowns.

A government shutdown typically occurs when the White House and Congress cannot reach an agreement on federal spending, forcing non-essential services to pause while negotiations continue.

What Nigerians Should Do

For Nigerians planning travel to the US, the embassy advised checking travel.state.gov for the latest updates on visa appointments, passport renewals, and other consular services.
