Borno Politics and the Road to 2027: Rising Voices and New Hopes

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, Borno State is emerging as one of the most politically active and dynamic regions in the North-East, with new faces and rising voices shaping the conversation about the state’s political future.
For decades, Borno has remained a stronghold of the All Progressives Congress (APC), largely due to the leadership style and achievements of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum. His humility, hard work, and compassion for the people have earned him national recognition, restoring confidence in governance and changing the narrative of a state once synonymous with insecurity.
Emerging Political Forces
With the 2027 governorship race gaining momentum, several political figures are already drawing public attention. Among the most frequently mentioned within the APC are Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno, the current Senate Chief Whip from Borno North, and Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan (SAN) from Borno Central — both respected for their experience, loyalty, and political discipline.
Also gaining traction is Matawale Kashim Imam, a two-time former PDP governorship candidate now aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC). His strong national connections position him as an influential player in the evolving political landscape.
Other notable figures include Prof. Muhammad Kyari Dikwa, Founder of Al-Ansar University, known for his academic leadership and grassroots influence, and Idrissa Mamman Durkwa, a former APC aspirant now actively building alliances across political movements in the state.
The ADC itself has begun to attract attention as a coalition of younger and reform-minded politicians determined to challenge the long-standing dominance of the APC through youth mobilization and community-based politics.
Opposition and the Search for Balance
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and ADC are rebuilding their structures across Borno, signaling renewed efforts to balance the political space. Political observers believe that the rise of youth and women participation—especially through social media—could play a decisive role in shaping the outcome of the 2027 elections.
The growing online discourse suggests that citizens are not only more politically aware but also eager to take part in deciding the next phase of leadership in the state.
Security, Recovery, and Governance
After years of insurgency, Borno’s politics is now increasingly focused on recovery, development, and peacebuilding. Voters are demanding leaders with clear blueprints for education, job creation, and rural development to consolidate the gains of the relative stability achieved in recent years.
Media organizations—particularly local radio and online platforms—are becoming instrumental in shaping public opinion, promoting peace, and encouraging civic participation. Analysts believe this period provides valuable lessons for Mass Communication students on how media can influence governance, democracy, and electoral behavior.
What to Expectations
As the 2027 elections approach, Borno State is expected to witness:
- More consultations and alliances among politicians from both the ruling party and the opposition.
- Stronger youth engagement in political activities and policy debates.
- A competitive contest between loyalists of the current government and new reform-minded leaders.
Conclusion
The road to 2027 is shaping up to be one of the most defining moments in Borno State’s political history. With a blend of continuity, reform, and rising civic awareness, the upcoming elections will not only test party structures but also reflect the true voice and aspirations of the people.
Whether through the continuation of APC leadership or the resurgence of opposition forces, one thing is certain — Borno’s political future looks dynamic, hopeful, and increasingly people-driven.
