Things to Avoid When Visiting Someone’s Home
Visiting someone’s home comes with unspoken rules of courtesy and respect. Whether it’s a close friend or a distant relative, being mindful of how you use their resources shows good manners. Here are some things to avoid when you’re at someone’s house:
1. Provisions
Even if you are visiting a close friend, avoid helping yourself to their provisions without permission. If they offer, accept it with courtesy and moderation.
2. Eggs
If you are allowed to have eggs, take only one. Eggs can be expensive, and consuming multiple without consideration is impolite.

3. Gas Usage
If the household uses gas for cooking, avoid using it to boil water or cook unless permitted. Gas is expensive, and it’s better to manage without it than to misuse someone else’s.

4. Beans
Do not take someone’s beans to make meals like moi moi unless they have explicitly given you permission. Beans are costly, and using them without consent is inconsiderate.

5. Rice
Refrain from taking rice without permission. If you need some, ask politely. Some people rely on their rice supply for meal planning, and taking it without consent is unacceptable.
6. Instant Noodles
Do not assume that instant noodles are always available for free use. If you are allowed to cook one, stick to just one pack, considering the rising cost of food.
7. Soaps and Detergents
Use bathing soap, washing soap, or detergent responsibly. Do not waste these items, as they are household essentials.

8. Garri
Garri is a staple that many people rely on, especially during difficult times. Avoid wasting or excessively consuming someone’s garri when visiting.
General Etiquette When Visiting
- Do not overstay your welcome.
- Avoid feeling too comfortable, even if your host tells you to “feel at home.”
- Never take someone’s phone or use their internet hotspot without permission. Mobile data is expensive, and not everyone can afford to share it freely.
Being a respectful guest makes you more welcome in any home. Always practice good manners and be considerate of your host’s resources.
