Students lament bitterly as Federal polytechnic Nekede Increases Cost for Textbooks, Result Verification and..,

The students of the Federal polytechnic Nekede have cried out for help from the SUG following the recent Increment on the cost for textbooks, result verification, acceptance fees and results clearance.

Textbooks which was being sold for #1,300 has now risen to #2,500 and o’level verification which was #2,500 before is now #4,500.

The polytechnic students also lament the charges for result clearance which was formerly free.

Students are now being charged #5,000 for ND result and #10,000 for HND result.

The students fault the school management for being inconsiderate with the unnecessary increments on textbooks and other fees adding that the sudden increment has been a burden for them and their parents.

A letter obtained by POLYTV from one of the student from the department of mass communication appealed to the Students union government to help them dialogue with the school management Pressuring that the unnecessary increment on every fees and levies in the polytechnic will force students into prostitution and other illegal ways of making money which in turns may damage the reputation of the polytechnic.

Part of the letter read: “You can imagine where a Federal Polytechnic fee amounts to 60 to 70 thousands of naira notes and some of these students sponsor themselves in school. With that not being enough, another increment was done on textbooks; from N1300 to N2,500 some N2000 depending on the number of pages. On the issue of this textbook, as I learnt from some lecturers’ complaints that the cost of production is on the high side……

“As one who knows about printing of books, I can attest that the cost of production is high but truth be told, we know that these books are not produced in 10s or in 100s rather in thousands of copies which makes the price manageable for lecturers to sell but instead the amount was multiplied two times. Some of these books we got are still the ones given to us during our ND’s no change whatsoever and yet we are paying times two of what we got them then”

“In the past two months, I got another shock of my life when I learnt that O’level verification which is slated for N2.500 for those with single result and N5,000 for those with two results have been increased to N4,500 for and 9,000 naira respectively. While some persons paid N2500 for a single result, others paid N4,500 for the same service of verification. As if all these things are not enough, the statement of result that some persons collected without money has been instructed in a memo dated 20th October, 2022 to be collected with N5000 for ND and #10,000 for HND.”

The student further begged the Students Union to address this issue as it’s becoming unbearable for them. “Sir, these constant increment in cost of services in our Polytechnic Community has become very unbearable, tormenting and an intentional attempt to frustrate we students in other to lure us into prostitution and all forms of social vises and illegal money making system.”
