Students Kick Against Renaming of The Polytechnic Ibadan, Demand Immediate Reversal

The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of The Polytechnic, Ibadan has publicly rejected the Oyo State Government’s recent decision to rename the institution, calling the move “unjustifiable” and “a threat to the identity and legacy” of the school.
In an official press release dated June 26, 2025, the union addressed Governor Seyi Makinde directly, expressing strong disapproval over the proposed name change. According to the union, the institution’s name has become a symbol of academic excellence and national recognition over the past 50 years.
“For over 50 years, The Polytechnic Ibadan has been a beacon of academic excellence, producing outstanding graduates who have made significant contributions to society,” the statement reads. “The name is synonymous with quality education and has earned respect and recognition nationwide.”
The Students’ Union warned that changing the institution’s name would erase its identity, diminish its rich heritage, and cause “irreparable harm” to its reputation and alumni network.
They urged the state government to reconsider its decision and allow the school to retain its original name, which, according to them, reflects the institution’s values, mission, and long-standing history. The Union also expressed readiness to engage in dialogue for alternative solutions that would serve the interest of the institution without compromising its legacy.
The press release concluded with a bold, repeated call to action:
“The Polytechnic Ibadan must remain as The Polytechnic Ibadan!”
The statement was jointly signed by Public Relations Officer Akinade Ridwan Bunyamin, President Oladipupo Olamide, and General Secretary Azeez Tolase.
As of the time of this report, there has been no official response from the Oyo State Government.
