NDDC Launches CNG Conversion Training for 400 Niger Delta Youths to Boost Clean Energy Jobs

The Niger Delta Development Commission has commenced a six-week specialised training programme on Compressed Natural Gas vehicle conversion for 400 youths drawn from across the Niger Delta region.
The initiative was formally unveiled at the Dakkada Skills Acquisition Centre in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. Speaking at the event, the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Samuel Ogbuku, described the programme as a strategic investment in human capital development aimed at positioning young people in the region at the centre of Nigeria’s clean energy transition.
Ogbuku, who was represented by the Executive Director, Projects, Dr Victor Antai, explained that the training would run in two batches of three weeks each. Participants will receive hands-on instruction in CNG vehicle conversion, system diagnostics, maintenance procedures, and safety compliance in line with international industry standards.
He noted that Compressed Natural Gas is gaining wider acceptance across Nigeria due to its cost efficiency and environmental benefits. According to him, the rising adoption of CNG-powered vehicles has created growing demand for certified and skilled auto technicians capable of handling gas conversion systems and maintenance services.
The NDDC chief emphasised that the programme is designed to address youth unemployment, promote entrepreneurship, and stimulate economic growth within the Niger Delta. He urged beneficiaries to take the opportunity seriously and avoid selling their starter packs upon completion of the training, stressing that the tools are intended to help them establish viable businesses in the expanding CNG conversion market.
The Director of Commercial and Industrial Development at the Commission, Mrs Lyna Okara, confirmed that all 400 participants were carefully selected and would undergo intensive practical and theoretical sessions. She encouraged the trainees to remain focused and fully maximise the opportunity provided.
A representative of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas, Mr Olayinka Rufai, commended the Commission for aligning with the Federal Government’s clean energy roadmap. He described the training programme as forward-looking and capable of accelerating the adoption of alternative fuel solutions across the region.
Also speaking at the event, Apostle Abasiandikan Nkono, the Akwa Ibom State representative on the NDDC Board, urged participants to leverage the skills acquired rather than continuously seeking new training programmes. He stated that expertise in CNG conversion presents long-term income opportunities as Nigeria deepens its transition to affordable and environmentally friendly fuel alternatives.
The Head Trainer from Viedenburg Energy Resources, Mr Saidu Hamdullahi, encouraged the trainees to remain disciplined and committed, adding that the global shift towards cleaner energy sources is opening up fresh business prospects in automotive gas systems, energy consulting, and industrial services.
Compressed Natural Gas is primarily composed of methane and is compressed to a fraction of its original volume, making it easier to store and transport. Compared to petrol and diesel, CNG produces lower carbon emissions, reduces engine wear, and offers lower operating costs for vehicle owners.
Industry analysts believe that structured technical training in CNG conversion and maintenance could unlock high-value employment opportunities in Nigeria’s automotive, oil and gas, and renewable energy sectors. With increasing government support for gas-powered mobility solutions, certified technicians are expected to play a critical role in driving adoption, improving safety standards, and supporting sustainable economic growth in the Niger Delta and beyond.
