Kogi State Polytechnic to Begin Degree Programmes in Partnership with Federal University Lokoja

In a landmark development for higher education in Kogi State, the Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Federal University Lokoja (FUL) to commence undergraduate degree programmes at the Polytechnic.
The agreement, sealed on Friday, August 22, 2025, at the Senate Building of FUL, paves the way for the establishment of a Study Centre at the Polytechnic’s main campus in Lokoja. The collaboration will run both regular undergraduate degree programmes as well as Top-Up programmes that allow Higher National Diploma (HND) holders to convert their certificates into equivalent degree qualifications. These programmes will be available on both part-time and full-time bases.
The MoU also covers staff and student exchange, equipment sharing for practicals, and other collaborative initiatives aimed at strengthening research and enhancing learning outcomes.
Speaking at the signing, the Rector of Kogi State Polytechnic, Professor Salisu Ogbo Usman, described the agreement as “historic in all ramifications,” adding that it would stand as one of the legacy achievements of his administration. He stressed that the Polytechnic, with its robust infrastructure, quality manpower, and fully accredited programmes, is well-positioned to support the collaboration.
On his part, the Vice Chancellor of Federal University Lokoja, Professor Olayemi Akinwunmi, hailed the partnership as a dream come true, noting that it would open more opportunities for students in Kogi State and beyond. He called for immediate implementation to maximize its impact.
Professor Musa Adeku Ibrahim, Director of the Centre for Distance and E-Learning at FUL, recalled that the process began on February 12, 2025, when Kogi State Polytechnic submitted a letter of intent. The proposal was later approved by the University Senate on August 7, 2025, after an oversight visit to the Polytechnic.
In his closing remarks, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) of FUL, Professor A.E. Bala, commended both institutions for their commitment to advancing education and assured that the University would uphold the agreement in full.
The signing ceremony was witnessed by principal officers and management staff of both institutions, marking what many have described as a turning point in the academic landscape of Kogi State.
