How Much Does It Cost to Study Abroad from Nigeria?

Studying abroad is a dream for many Nigerian students. The idea of getting a foreign degree, gaining international exposure, and improving career prospects sounds very attractive. But one question always comes up first—how much will it cost?

The truth is, studying abroad isn’t cheap. From tuition fees and visa costs to accommodation and travel, there are many expenses involved. But with proper planning and the right information, you can figure out what to expect and how to prepare financially. In this article, we’ll break down the actual costs involved in studying abroad from Nigeria, using real figures and examples to help you plan better.

1. Tuition Fees by Country and Program Type

The cost of tuition depends on the country you choose, the university, and your program of study.

In the United Kingdom, undergraduate tuition fees for international students usually range between £10,000 and £20,000 per year. Postgraduate programs can cost even more, especially in business or medical fields.

In Canada, tuition for international students is around CAD 15,000 to CAD 30,000 per year depending on the university and program.

In the United States, fees vary widely. Community colleges may cost around $8,000 to $12,000 per year, while universities charge $20,000 to $50,000 per year for undergraduate programs.

In Germany, most public universities don’t charge tuition fees for undergraduate programs, except for a small semester contribution of about €250. However, some master’s programs have tuition, especially in Baden-Württemberg.

In Australia, expect to pay AUD 20,000 to AUD 45,000 per year.

Always check the school’s official website for the most accurate fees. Some offer discounts or scholarships specifically for African or Nigerian students.

2. Application and Admission Expenses

Even before you’re admitted, you’ll spend money on applications:

<
  • Application fees: $50 to $150 per university
  • English proficiency tests: IELTS costs around ₦100,000–₦130,000 while TOEFL costs about ₦90,000–₦110,000
  • Standardized tests: SAT (₦90,000), GRE (₦130,000), GMAT (~₦130,000), depending on your course

Also, consider the cost of postage if you’re sending documents by courier, which can be ₦15,000 or more per package.

3. Visa Application and Immigration Costs

Every country has its own visa fees:

  • UK Student Visa: ₦250,000–₦300,000
  • Canada Study Permit: ₦100,000–₦120,000 (plus ₦40,000 for biometric)
  • USA F1 Visa: $160 (~₦200,000) + SEVIS fee of $350
  • Australia Student Visa: AUD 710 (~₦400,000)
  • Germany Student Visa: Around ₦50,000, plus proof of funds (blocked account of €11,208)

Make sure your international passport is valid. If not, renewing it in Nigeria currently costs ₦35,000 to ₦70,000 depending on the type and page count.

4. Proof of Funds Requirements

Before a visa is granted, most countries will ask you to show proof that you can fund your studies and living expenses.

In the UK, you must show at least £1,023 per month for up to 9 months if you’re studying outside London (or £1,334 per month in London), plus your tuition fees.

In Canada, the minimum is CAD 10,000 per year (CAD 11,000 for Quebec) plus tuition.

In Germany, you need to deposit about €11,208 in a blocked account for your first year.

This money must be in your bank account, sponsor’s account, or a recognized scholarship letter.
