Omowunmi Fatoki, a 25-year-old graduate from the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), achieved a first-class degree in Industrial Chemistry. Her academic journey was marked by determination and strategic choices.
Academic Journey and Challenges
Initially aspiring to study Medicine or Pharmacy, Omowunmi faced setbacks due to challenges with Biology. Recognizing her strength in Chemistry, she shifted her focus to Industrial Chemistry, believing it offered versatility and aligned with her interests. From the outset, she aimed for academic excellence. Despite a strong start, she encountered difficulties in her 300-level second semester, where a particularly challenging course led to a GPA drop to 4.36. Undeterred, she intensified her efforts to maintain her first-class standing.
Study Habits and Time Management
Omowunmi emphasized consistent study habits, reviewing class materials regularly rather than cramming before exams. This approach ensured she was well-prepared throughout the semester. She also balanced academics with extracurricular activities, including private tutoring and active participation in fellowship groups.
Overcoming Challenges
In her 400-level first semester, Omowunmi faced an unexpected grade discrepancy in a course she was confident about. Despite following up with the lecturer and department, the issue remained unresolved, leading her to accept the outcome and focus on future success.
Social Life and Personal Choices
To stay focused, Omowunmi consciously avoided distractions such as clubbing and parties. She prioritized her studies and personal development, understanding the importance of discipline in achieving her goals.
Advice to Students
Omowunmi advises students to identify their strengths and choose paths that align with them. She underscores the importance of consistent study habits, effective time management, and the willingness to seek help when needed.
