FG Unveils New Agenda to Reposition the Teaching Profession in Nigeria

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming the teaching profession in Nigeria, describing teachers as the foundation of national development and the true architects of the country’s future.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, made this known during the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration organised by the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) in Abuja.

According to Alausa, the government is executing a clear and actionable agenda aimed at restoring the dignity of teachers, improving professional standards, and making teaching one of the most respected careers in Nigeria.

“Teachers are not just transmitters of knowledge; they are custodians of stability and the architects of change. Our nation’s strength rests on the strength of our teachers,” the minister stated.

Government’s Plan to Professionalise Teaching in Nigeria

Alausa explained that the Ministry of Education is implementing a comprehensive reform that focuses on professionalisation, empowerment, and reward for teachers across all levels.

He said the Federal Government’s priorities include:

  • Strengthening teacher development pipelines from pre-service training to continuous professional development.
  • Expanding welfare packages and ensuring fair career progression.
  • Promoting professional certification through the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN).
  • Enhancing the quality of teacher education through the Dual-Mandate System in Colleges of Education.

“We are expanding the pathways for teacher qualification through the Dual-Mandate in Colleges of Education, enabling these institutions to offer both degree and NCE programs,” Alausa said. “This will produce educators who are competent, confident, and ready to deliver the curriculum of tomorrow.”

Empowering Teachers Through Continuous Training and Better Welfare

The education minister emphasised that improving teacher welfare remains central to the government’s education reform. Plans are already underway to create continuous professional development programmes, upgrade training institutions, and strengthen partnerships between colleges and universities to raise teaching standards.

He also revealed that the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) is being repositioned to enforce national standards and ensure that every classroom in Nigeria is led by a qualified and certified teacher.

“We want to ensure that every child in Nigeria is taught by a registered, supported, and well-trained teacher,” he added.

New COEASU President Vows to Strengthen Union Advocacy

At the same event, Dr. Ahmad Lawan was sworn in as the new President of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU). Lawan praised the outgoing executives and pledged to prioritise the welfare and professional growth of academic staff in colleges of education nationwide.

In his acceptance speech delivered at the National Commission for Colleges of Education, Lawan vowed to intensify engagement with government agencies to implement the FGN–COEASU 2010 Agreement, which focuses on improved salaries, infrastructure, and funding.

“This marks a defining moment in our collective struggle to reposition Colleges of Education. We will continue to push for better funding, fair working conditions, and stronger policies that promote quality teaching,” he said.

Addressing Declining Enrolment and Education Quality

The Federal Government has expressed concern about the declining enrolment in colleges of education and is now introducing strategies to attract more students into the teaching profession. These include:

  • Providing scholarship opportunities for education students.
  • Creating internship pathways that guarantee employment after graduation.
  • Improving teachers’ salaries and allowances to make the profession more competitive.

Education experts have also urged the government to ensure that these reforms translate into measurable outcomes, particularly in rural areas where qualified teachers are most needed.

The Bigger Picture: Rebuilding Nigeria’s Education Foundation

The government’s renewed focus on teachers aligns with its broader objective of revitalising the Nigerian education system. With rising demand for skilled teachers in basic, secondary, and tertiary institutions, the reforms are expected to boost education quality and prepare Nigerian students for global competitiveness.

Dr. Alausa stressed that no education system can rise above the quality of its teachers, reaffirming that empowering educators remains the foundation of sustainable national growth.

“Teachers are the nation’s most valuable human capital. Investing in them is not optional — it’s essential for our collective future,” the minister concluded.
