FG Launches Digital Student ID System for WAEC and NECO Candidates in Major Education Reform

The Federal Government has introduced a nationwide digital student identification system, issuing unique Learner Identification Numbers to more than 1.9 million candidates registered for the 2026 examinations conducted by the West African Examinations Council and the National Examinations Council.

The initiative, unveiled by the Federal Ministry of Education Nigeria, represents a significant step toward modernizing Nigeria’s education system through data-driven governance, digital identity management, and improved academic tracking.

According to the ministry, the new system assigns each learner a permanent and traceable academic identity designed to support continuous learning, enhance education planning, and enable timely interventions across the sector. The move is also expected to strengthen transparency and efficiency in examination processes nationwide.

Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, described the rollout as a transformative milestone aligned with the administration’s broader vision of leveraging technology to drive human capital development and economic growth.

He explained that providing every student with a unique identification number would create a structured pathway that supports academic progression from early education through to career development, while ensuring inclusivity across the system.

In the first phase of implementation, over 1.9 million candidates sitting for the 2026 WAEC and NECO examinations have already been assigned their Learner Identification Numbers. This marks a critical advancement in education data management and reinforces the credibility of public examinations.

The Learner Identification Number functions as a permanent digital identity for each student, enabling seamless tracking of academic records regardless of school changes or relocation. Each identifier contains structured data, including the student’s state, local government area, school affiliation, and a unique personal code.

The system is powered by the Digitised National Education Management Information System, a centralized database that already assigns unique identification codes to schools across the country. By linking students to verified institutional records, authorities aim to improve examination verification, reduce cases of impersonation, and enhance the integrity of assessment processes.

Beyond examinations, the platform is expected to deliver broader benefits across Nigeria’s education ecosystem. It will help identify out-of-school children, monitor student progression, detect dropout patterns, and support targeted interventions by policymakers and education stakeholders.

Officials noted that the system is fully digital and integrated into national education data frameworks, positioning it as a key driver of education technology adoption in Nigeria. This aligns with global trends where digital identity systems and education analytics are becoming essential tools for improving learning outcomes and workforce readiness.

The next phase of the rollout will extend the Learner Identification Number to all students in both public and private schools nationwide. This expansion will be implemented through national data systems and supported by the Annual School Census to ensure comprehensive coverage.

Education stakeholders, including schools, examination bodies, parents, and students, have been encouraged to embrace the new system and ensure full compliance. The government believes widespread adoption will unlock significant long-term benefits, including improved policy planning, enhanced educational transparency, and stronger alignment with global digital education standards.

As Nigeria continues to invest in education technology and digital transformation, initiatives like this are expected to create new opportunities in high-demand sectors such as data analytics, cybersecurity, and digital infrastructure, areas that increasingly attract high-paying roles in today’s global economy.
