Federal Government Begins Pioneer Admission into 34 Technical Colleges

The National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) has commenced the selection process for the first intake of students into Federal Technical Colleges (FTCs) nationwide.
Minister of Education, Dr. Morufu Alausa, disclosed this during the official opening of the selection exercise at NABTEB’s headquarters in Benin City, Edo State. Represented by Dr. Muyibat Olodo, Director of Technology and Science Education, the Minister explained that this step aligns with the newly launched Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme under the Federal Ministry of Education.
Dr. Alausa described the selection as a crucial part of the TVET initiative, which was officially introduced on May 30, 2025. He stressed that the annual exercise would ensure that applicants seeking admission into the National Technical Certificate and National Business Certificate levels are chosen strictly on merit and performance in the qualifying exams, which were conducted by NABTEB on June 14, 2025.
He acknowledged the ongoing challenge of low enrolment in technical schools, which he attributed to lingering societal and parental bias against vocational education. However, he expressed optimism that the Federal Government’s free tuition policy for students in Federal Technical Colleges is beginning to change this narrative.
“Our technical colleges must provide structured, purpose-driven training that equips students with practical skills, credible assessments, and industry-recognised certifications,” Dr. Alausa said.
As part of its expansion plan, the Ministry announced the establishment of two new Federal Technical Colleges in Enugu and Plateau States, both of which are set to open for the 2026/2027 academic session. With these additions, the total number of FTCs will rise to 34, with three more colleges to be established soon.
The Federal Government is also set to convert existing Federal Science and Technical Colleges into full-fledged Federal Technical Colleges as part of broader reforms aimed at strengthening technical education and making it a viable option for youth employment and economic growth. This transition is scheduled to begin in September and will mark a shift away from science-based enrolments toward core technical and vocational training.
Additionally, the Minister announced the launch of the National Policy on Skills Development, which outlines a roadmap for boosting skills acquisition across Nigeria. Plans are in place to engage stakeholders nationwide to ensure effective implementation of the new policy.
Speaking at the event, NABTEB Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Mohammed Mohammed, urged officials involved in the selection process to uphold integrity, fairness, and transparency. He emphasized that the choices made during this exercise would shape the future of thousands of young Nigerians aspiring to gain technical skills.
“At NABTEB, we are committed to ensuring that every successful candidate can promptly access their results and secure their admission letters without delay,” Prof. Mohammed assured.
The week-long selection exercise is expected to conclude on Friday and involves active participation from principals of Federal Technical Colleges, officials from the Federal Ministry of Education, and NABTEB representatives.
