Chevening Scholarships 2025: Application Deadline and Key Updates

The British High Commission in Sri Lanka has announced that applications for the Chevening Scholarships to study in the United Kingdom will close on 7 October 2025 at 12:00 UTC.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to review the official guidance on the Chevening website and carefully assess their readiness before submitting their applications.
New Eligibility Criteria
A notable update this year is that only work experience gained after graduation will be counted toward the two-year (2,800 hours) minimum work experience requirement.
In addition, the application period has been shortened to two months, and the essay questions have been revised to reflect how candidates’ chosen courses and universities connect with global priority areas.
What the Scholarship Offers
The Chevening programme provides fully funded one-year master’s degrees at leading UK universities. It targets individuals with the potential to drive positive change in their home countries and internationally.
For over four decades, Chevening has built a strong global reputation, attracting hundreds of thousands of applications worldwide. In Sri Lanka, its alumni network spans more than 40 years and includes professionals from diverse fields who have gone on to make an impact in leadership, governance, and community development.
Qualities of a Successful Applicant
Candidates are expected to demonstrate:
- Exceptional leadership skills
- Ability to influence and inspire others
- Strong networking abilities supported by real-life examples
Emma Hennessey, Head of The Scholarships Unit at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), emphasized that the selection process is highly competitive. She noted that successful scholars return home with the skills, global networks, and confidence needed to address critical challenges and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
Hennessey also encouraged aspiring applicants to strengthen their experiences if they are not yet ready, highlighting the long-term value of preparing for this opportunity.
Four Decades of Impact
Since its launch in 1983, the Chevening programme has supported more than 60,000 professionals worldwide, reinforcing the UK’s commitment to developing the next generation of leaders.
