6 Stages You will go Through with Loan Apps that Defame

Ever borrowed money from a loan app, thinking it was a quick fix, only to find yourself trapped in a nightmare of threats and defamation? You’re not alone. Many borrowers have fallen victim to the sneaky tactics of these apps, and what starts as a simple loan can quickly spiral into a web of harassment and stress. Curious to know how it all unfolds and how to protect yourself from these modern-day loan sharks? Let’s take a deep dive into the shocking stages you might face when loan apps turn to defamation—and how you can fight back.
Stage 1: The Threatening Messages Begin
When you fall behind on payments, loan apps—often with agents working under questionable practices—start bombarding you with threats. These so-called “agents” may even pretend to be your friends, advising you to remove their name as a guarantor to avoid further issues.
Stage 2: Initial Defamation
After a period of harassment, the loan app will escalate matters by sending defamatory messages to your contacts. The number of people they target can range anywhere from 10 to 50, depending on the app, with the aim of creating maximum embarrassment.
Stage 3: The Negotiation Trap
At this point, they’ll likely call you with a “negotiation” offer. The pitch is simple: pay the original loan and interest, and they’ll waive the overdue interest. This seems like a lifeline, but it’s part of their tactic to secure a partial payment while still defaming you.
Stage 4: A False Apology
After the defamation escalates, you might get a call from them offering an apology. They’ll claim one of their agents acted out of line and promise to send an apology letter to your contacts—if you make a payment.
Stage 5: The Final Blow—Widespread Defamation
If you don’t comply, the final stage is a full-blown defamation attack. Messages will be sent to all your contacts—sometimes as many as 200—further tarnishing your reputation. Since each message costs them a small fee, usually around 20 Naira, they do this only when they believe it’s the most effective way to recoup some losses.
Stage 6: Freedom at Last!
Once you’ve weathered this storm, you’ll finally be free from the clutches of the loan sharks. However, a key tip: Never engage with their messages. The more you read, the worse it gets, potentially worsening your mental health and spiraling you deeper into depression.
