5 Nigerian Universities That Offer Admission Without JAMB UTME

For many Nigerian students, gaining admission into a university often becomes a frustrating journey—especially when the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) UTME becomes a stumbling block. Every year, thousands of applicants are left disappointed: some fall short of the cut-off mark, others pass the exam but never secure admission, and many are simply worn out by the uncertainty.
Thankfully, a growing number of accredited universities are now offering alternative routes—allowing students to pursue their academic dreams without going through JAMB UTME.
Here are five NUC-approved universities in Nigeria currently offering direct admission without the need for UTME scores.
1. Miva Open University
Miva Open University stands out as Nigeria’s first operational private open university offering admission without JAMB. Prospective students only need to have five O’Level credits (including English and Mathematics) obtained in no more than two sittings.
The institution runs a fully online model, delivering lectures via pre-recorded videos and digital materials. Its flexible, self-paced learning environment is ideal for working-class individuals or those balancing school with other responsibilities.
- Tuition: From ₦150,000 per semester
- Popular Courses: Tech, business, and management
- Learning Format: 100% remote
Miva’s practical, skill-based curriculum is designed to equip students with real-world experience while maintaining flexibility.
2. National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN)
NOUN is Nigeria’s premier open and distance learning university. It does not require JAMB UTME for admission, but applicants must meet basic O’Level requirements.
Admission is processed through the school’s official portal, and the institution offers a wide range of programs across different disciplines. NOUN’s reach and flexibility have made it a popular option for professionals, entrepreneurs, and adult learners.
- Application: Online via NOUN portal
- Learning Mode: Self-paced and nationwide reach
3. Iconic Open University
A relatively new name in Nigeria’s higher education space, Iconic Open University is another JAMB-free institution leveraging technology for remote learning. Like other open universities, Iconic allows students to learn on their own schedule without the rigid structure of traditional campus life.
Admission requirements include valid O’Level results and necessary supporting documents. The university’s personalized and tech-enabled approach makes it suitable for non-traditional learners looking to study while working or managing family responsibilities.
4. West Midlands Open University, Ibadan
Licensed by the National Universities Commission (NUC), West Midlands Open University is a fully online institution offering degree programs without requiring JAMB UTME.
Students must meet the minimum O’Level qualifications and complete an internal admission process through the school. The university prides itself on quality distance learning, with structured online modules and periodic assessments to ensure academic rigor.
5. Al-Muhibbah Open University, Abuja
Established in 2023, Al-Muhibbah Open University offers admission into various undergraduate programs without JAMB. Admission is based on O’Level results and other conventional entry requirements.
The university’s mission is to provide accessible education to students who cannot attend conventional universities due to distance, financial constraints, or personal commitments. Its learning platform is remote-friendly, user-focused, and supportive of students at all stages of their academic journey.
What About JUPEB and IJMB?
While JUPEB and IJMB offer admission into 200-level in many universities without JAMB, they often involve long pre-degree programs lasting 9 to 12 months. These programs can be expensive and do not guarantee admission—final acceptance depends on your results and the university’s decision. So, while they remain viable alternatives, they’re not as straightforward or flexible as the direct-entry options listed above.
The Way Forward
The pressure to pass JAMB shouldn’t be the end of your academic aspirations. With these five forward-thinking universities, students now have the opportunity to:
- Start school without JAMB
- Study online or from any location
- Learn at their own pace
- Graduate on time and job-ready
Whether you’re giving university admission another shot or exploring alternatives for the first time, your academic journey can still begin—JAMB or not. All you need is your O’Level result, the right institution, and the determination to keep moving forward.
