10 Things You Should Never Do in Public

Did you know there are many things you should never do in public? Yes, there are many of them, but I will point out just ten (10). As much as there is freedom of speech, expression, and movement, there are some things that an educated person should avoid doing in public. So what are these things? They are as listed below.

1. RELIGION AND TRIBALISM.

Everyone has a spiritual belief in which they all believe. Some people may choose to be Christian, Muslim, or whatever religion they practice. You should respect other people’s religions and beliefs, especially if you are a student schooling in another city or town where their beliefs contradict yours. Never argue or engage in religious discussion in public or in large crowds, as this may cause anger, and anger can lead to the destruction of lives and property. If at all, you find yourself in the midst of people criticizing and badmouthing religion, belief, and tribes of other people, kindly excuse yourself from such discussion. If at all you must do anything in public, it must never be a religious discussion, especially if the topic is tribalism or against other people’s beliefs.

2. POLITICS.

Politics is very interesting and cool to watch and participate in, but as a student, you should apply wisdom as politics in Nigeria is known to be violent. Do you have any preferred candidates? If so, keep it to yourself; educate your family and friends on why they should vote for your candidate, but never argue or dabble in politics in public because it is unsafe. I’ve heard stories of people being attacked for supporting a particular candidate in public space. When you are in public and people are talking about politics, no matter how interesting the topic may be, save yourself from the stress and never interfere in such a discussion.

3. SEPARATIST.

Nigeria is a country full of people from different regions and agendas. Some are calling for restructuring and a referendum. As much as I believe that there should be freedom of speech and association, you should never involve yourself in supporting any separatist group in public, as doing this is risky for your security. Whether you support Biafra, Yoruba Nation, or Nigeria, you should not join them to stage any separatist rally, gathering, or meeting in public or show yourself supporting these groups. I understand that you have the right to support any association, but never should you do this in public.

4. WITHDRAWING A LARGE AMOUNT OF MONEY.

Did you know that withdrawing a large amount of money at the ATM stand in public is risky for your safety? Yes it is, because the rate of insecurity in the country right now isn’t encouraging. If you want to withdraw a large amount of money, make sure that the queue is short and if you are using a POS stand, it should be with someone who you trust. For your own security, you should never do this when in public.

5. SHOWOFF ON SOCIAL MEDIA.

Did you know that social media is the largest public space? Even if you regulate your social media accounts, people can still monitor what you do through the things you post online. As much as social media is good for connecting with family and friends, you should never show off yourself on social media. You bought a new phone, you posted it; you bought a new car, you posted it; and now you are traveling. You still posted it and you keep wondering how you were kidnapped without knowing that you compromised your own security. Not all things should be displayed for the public to see, and social media is one of them.

6. STREET FIGHTING.

Don’t just pass through school; instead, let school pass through you. One of the ways to prove that you are educated is through your attitude and behavior. No matter how people provoke you, never fight with anyone in the street or in a public space. We are now in a digital world where certain things trend online. People will be very quick to make videos of you and judge you even when you are not at fault. So you must avoid fighting in public, whether in the street or with your neighbors.

7. EAT.

Are you the type of person that eats anything in public places? Oh no, that is an uncultured manner. You should not eat at every place you find yourself, and if you must eat, sit down and eat. Perhaps a restaurant is okay, but not that you should be chewing hot corn while trekking or walking along the streets. Sometimes you should learn to say, “Thank you, I’m okay.” When people offer you food as a visitor or when attending a party, it is not a must that you eat. If you must eat, do it in a decent manner, wash your hands, and don’t talk while eating in public.

8. SING.

Another thing you should not do in public is sing aloud while using earplugs. By doing this, you might be disturbing someone sitting close to you. For instance, when you board a commercial vehicle, use earplugs and enjoy your song alone. Don’t play your music too loudly. Lower it and please don’t talk to yourself while in public as people may mistake you for being a mad person as only a mad person would talk to himself. If you like talking to yourself, you can do that privately and not in public.

9. IMPROPER WASTE DISPOSAL.

How did you dispose of waste in public? Did you just drop them on the floor? Oh no, that is wrong. Whenever you buy a biscuit or any snack, after finishing eating, dump the remnants in your pocket or your bag and dispose of them properly in your waste when you get home. Don’t drop them on the floor, for instance, in a bank, market place, or at school. In addition, don’t just pee anywhere, instead use public toilets.

10. PICKING CALLS.

Picking up sensitive calls when driving or in a public place should be the last thing you will ever do in public. Instead, inform the caller that you will return the call when you get home, except if the call is an emergency. Never pick up sensitive calls pertaining to business or family in public.
