“Your ND/HND Degree Might Be Useless” — Reno Omokri Warns Students to Rethink Their Course Choices in Viral Post

Former presidential aide and author Reno Omokri has sparked debate online with his latest remarks on the value of certain academic degrees. In a viral social media post, Omokri emphasized that not all degrees hold the same weight in today’s job market—especially in the age of artificial intelligence.
“All degrees are not equal. I repeat, all degrees are not equal,” Omokri wrote, stressing that a Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) carries more career value than a PhD in fields such as political science, sociology, theatre arts, religious studies, or mass communication.
According to him, degrees that do not align with labour market demands often leave graduates frustrated, particularly those who venture into international relations without having strong political or financial backing.
“Except you are already a diplomat, a wealthy politician, or a bored billionaire’s child, studying international relations will lead to international frustration,” he warned.
To illustrate his point, Omokri compared academic value to Olympic medals, noting that a single gold medal places a country above others with multiple silver and bronze. “Be intentional. The value of your degree depends on what the labour market thinks about it, not what you feel about it,” he added.
He urged students to avoid emotional decisions when selecting a course of study and advised those in less marketable fields to pick up high-demand skills: “If you already studied a course that does not fall into the favour bracket of the labour market, do not despair. Learn a skill and you will go uphill!”
Omokri’s comments, tagged under his #RenosNuggets series, have triggered strong reactions online, with many agreeing while others argued for the importance of arts and humanities in shaping society.
