Program Details
The scholarship is offered through the Wildlife Eco-Epidemiology Lab under the Department of Veterinary and Clinical Life Sciences at Utah State University. The selected student will work as a graduate research assistant on projects related to avian disease outbreaks and long-term wildlife health.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead a study analyzing historic mortality patterns in waterfowl around the Great Salt Lake using necropsy and field data
- Support a postdoctoral research project on avian botulism
- Assist in developing surveillance and response plans for outbreaks
- Integrate historical datasets on bird populations and lake hydrology
- Build epidemiological models to identify outbreak risk factors and inform wildlife management decisions
Eligibility Criteria
Basic Requirements
- A Bachelor’s degree in epidemiology, disease ecology, wildlife biology, biological sciences, or a related field
- Strong communication, analytical, and teamwork skills
- Ability to work with diverse stakeholders
- Understanding of safety procedures in field and laboratory research settings
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with epidemiology, wildlife biology, population modeling, GIS/spatial analysis, or remote sensing
- Familiarity with handling live or deceased animals, biosafety procedures (BSL-2 or higher), and lab research
- A strong foundation in research writing and scientific communication
