UNICAL VC Sues For More External Security Presence
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi has stated the need for a robust external security presence in the institution.
Prof. Florence Obi while receiving the Cross River State Commissioner of Police, Alhassan Barabe in her office stated this against the backdrop of recent threats to lives and pocket cases of armed robbery recorded in the Staff quarters.
Prof. Obi said if unchecked and nipped in the bud, other crimes like kidnapping, Cultism and High drug intake which have been successfully managed over the past few years will resurface on campus.
She said like most 2nd Generation Universities, the University is still grappling with porous borders and insufficient security personnel to man all vulnerable entry and exit points, a development largely attributed to the unemployment challenge in the nation.
The Vice-Chancellor thanked the Police Boss for the laudable visit and his interest in the security operations and policing of the institution, soliciting more interface between the Police Command and the Institution.
The Cross River State Commissioner of Police, Alhassan Balarabe assured the Vice Chancellor of the commitment of his command towards strengthening the security architecture in the University of Calabar(Unical).
While expressing his readiness to further strengthen the existing relationship between the institution and the Nigerian Police, he said the Police, in collaboration with the internal security of the University, will intensify security surveillance in the institution to ward off criminals.
To this end, he said gallant police officers will be assigned to the University to beef-up security on campus and its environs.
