Tinubu’s Student Loan Scheme Tipped as a Game-Changer for Nigeria’s Education Sector

Nigeria’s higher education sector has received a major boost as Senator Neda Imasuen, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, described President Bola Tinubu’s student loan program as a “game-changer” capable of transforming access to quality tertiary education.
Speaking at the University of Benin’s Faculty of Arts, where he received a Distinguished Legislative Leadership Award, Senator Imasuen said the Student Loan Act represents a bold step toward making higher education more inclusive and affordable for millions of Nigerian youths.
Education Beyond Certificates
Representing Edo South Senatorial District, Imasuen emphasized that education should not be limited to obtaining certificates but must focus on building character, resilience, and leadership skills.

The senator highlighted the government’s intention to expand educational financing, assuring students and parents that the legislative arm will continue to support initiatives that reduce the financial burden of tertiary education.
Direct Support for Students and Families
Imasuen detailed his personal contributions to education within Edo South, revealing that he has awarded over 420 scholarships to indigent students in the past two years. In addition, he has funded Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) registration fees for more than 500 candidates and sponsored vocational training programs for parents in areas such as modern farming, fashion design, and traditional event services—initiatives aimed at fostering self-reliance and community development.
University Leaders Applaud Educational Drive
Representing the Vice Chancellor, Professor Edosa Bright Omoregie, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) Professor Victor Ighineweka praised the Faculty of Arts as a “beacon of intellectual and cultural development,” producing alumni who have shaped Nigeria’s academic, political, and artistic landscape.
Human Values in an AI Era
Delivering the keynote lecture, Professor Francis Egbokhare addressed the topic “The Place of Humanity in an AI Era.” He noted that while Artificial Intelligence offers incredible opportunities, the greatest challenges facing the world remain humanistic, not scientific.
“Technology cannot replace values, equity, and purpose. True leadership and problem-solving will always depend on human-centered thinking,” he stated.
Why the Student Loan Act Matters for Nigeria
The federal student loan scheme is designed to provide low-interest loans to qualified students, ensuring that financial limitations no longer hinder academic ambitions. Policy analysts believe this initiative could attract international attention and potential foreign investments in education, creating jobs and boosting Nigeria’s knowledge economy.
Economists also predict that improved access to education will lead to higher lifetime earnings, increased tax revenues, and reduced unemployment—factors that appeal to advertisers in finance, banking, career coaching, and education technology, making this development a high-value topic for digital publishers.
Key Takeaways for Students and Parents
- Affordable Education: Access to tertiary education without upfront tuition pressure.
- Job Creation Potential: Better-educated graduates drive economic growth.
- Vocational Support: Programs to empower families and create small business opportunities.
Senator Imasuen concluded by urging continued collaboration between government, universities, and private sector partners to sustain the momentum. “This loan scheme is not just about paying fees—it’s about securing Nigeria’s future,” he said.
