Study Abroad Alert: US Consulate to Host Pre-Departure Orientation for Nigerian Students Heading to America

The United States Consulate General in Lagos has announced a pre-departure orientation programme for Nigerian students who have secured valid US student visas, as part of efforts to help them transition smoothly into academic and social life in the United States.
The orientation session is scheduled to hold on Thursday, December 18, between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., at the US Consulate General located at 2 Walter Carrington Crescent, Victoria Island, Lagos.
According to an official notice released by the US Mission in Nigeria, the programme is open to all Nigerian holders of US student visas. Interested participants are required to complete an online registration through a form provided on the mission’s official social media platforms.
The pre-departure orientation is designed to equip students with practical knowledge and firsthand insights needed to succeed academically and personally while studying in the United States. EducationUSA alumni currently enrolled in various US institutions will lead interactive sessions, sharing real-life experiences and guidance on navigating the American education system.
Participants will receive detailed information on adjusting to cultural differences, managing academic expectations, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and building positive relationships with lecturers and fellow students. The programme will also address important topics such as securing on-campus employment, applying for internships, accessing CPT and OPT opportunities, earning scholarships, qualifying for honours programmes, and achieving strong academic performance.
Additional sessions will focus on travel preparation, packing essentials, student visa renewal procedures, financial planning, time management, mental health support, and strategies for dealing with discrimination, racism, and sexual harassment on campus.
The initiative comes at a time when international students are paying closer attention to US immigration policies, following reports of increased visa enforcement and revocations affecting foreign nationals, including students, over security and legal concerns.
By offering this orientation, the US Mission aims to ensure that Nigerian students are well-prepared, informed, and confident as they begin their educational journey in the United States, while also maximizing the academic and career opportunities available through the US student visa programme.
