What is Cooperative Economics and Management all About?
The general objective of the Department of Cooperative Economics and Management is to embark on cooperative education and training to turn out an adequate number of personnel to efficiently manage cooperative societies and related organizations in the country and beyond.
The course provides an understanding of cooperatives as a model of organization that creates both social and economic value. The Department also trains students on co-management and how to achieve more effective and equitable systems of resource management.
It helps to mobilize human skills, processes, and technical and financial resources. Cooperative economics and management is closely allied with collaborative management, participatory management, community management, joint management, and stakeholder management.
Diplomates of the programme will work in the public and private sectors of the economy as well as Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) or assist interested groups in setting up Co-operative Societies.
On completion of the programme, the ND/HND program, graduates should be able to:
- Assist in the execution of Cooperative development policies.
- Educate the public on cooperative principles, policies, laws and practices.
- Assist in managing the area cooperative office at local government or district level.
- Assist in data collection for decision making.
- Produce cooperative reports.
- Carry out various types of cooperative communication.
- Apply basic principles of economics in cooperative development
- Keep basic financial records and other transactions in cooperative Societies.
- Participate in cooperative business planning and control.
- Seek legal assistance on cooperative matters.
- Assist in procurement, sales and distribution of cooperative products.
- Assist in carrying out research for cooperative activities.
- Apply basic storage and preservation techniques for cooperative products.
- Participate in organizing and undertaking cooperative advocacies.
- Participate in the settlement of cooperative disputes.

O’LEVEL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR COOPERATIVE ECONOMICS AND MANAGEMENT
GCE ordinary level or its equivalent, Teachers Grade II, WASSCE, SSCE, NVC with at least five credit passes including English Language, Mathematics and any other three subjects from the following; Economics/Commerce, Principles of Accounts, Business Methods, Marketing, History/Government, Geography, Biology /Agricultural Science obtained at not more than two sittings.
UTME SUBJECT COMBINATION:
- Mathematics and any two (2) of Economics, Geography, Biology or Agricultural Science History, Government, Commerce or Principle of Accounts
