FUTA Best Graduate Reveals How He Scored 4.98 CGPA and Secured Scholarships

Aduragbemi Akindunbi, a 25-year-old Civil Engineering graduate of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), has set a new academic benchmark by graduating as the 2024 overall best student with an unprecedented CGPA of 4.98.

Choosing Civil Engineering and Early Interests

Akindunbi explained that his passion for infrastructure motivated him to study Civil Engineering. Beyond academics, he enjoys watching football and creating videos, including editing his own content.

Reaction to a Historic CGPA

Reflecting on his achievement, he shared that seeing his final CGPA was a thrilling confirmation of years of dedication and consistent effort. His 4.98 CGPA surpassed the previous record of 4.96, cementing his place in FUTA history. The university formally recognised his accomplishment during the convocation ceremony.

Influences and Mentorship

Akindunbi credited much of his success to early mentorship. During his first semester, a senior colleague, Michael Agwulonu, guided him on navigating university life and academic strategy. This mentorship, coupled with his own drive, helped him achieve a 4.95 in his first semester, setting the foundation for his record-breaking journey.

Competition and Motivation

While many students in his department excelled academically, Akindunbi noted that his motivation was not rooted in rivalry. Instead, he embraced a collaborative environment where peers shared ideas and strategies, which collectively inspired high achievement.

Overcoming Challenges

Akindunbi faced several obstacles, including financial constraints, health issues, and personal setbacks. He battled tooth pain and a skin infection during exams, and even dealt with the theft of his primary phone days before exams. Despite these hurdles, he maintained focus and resilience, relying on support from friends and mentors to stay on course.

Financial challenges were significant before university admission, as his family had multiple siblings in school. A supportive benefactor covered his acceptance and tuition fees, allowing him to focus on academics while working part-time to support himself.

Scholarships and Recognition

During his studies, Akindunbi received scholarships from MTN Foundation, Chevron, and the Federal Government’s SSB programme. These awards provided additional support and reinforced his commitment to excellence.

Learning from Setbacks

Even top-performing students face unexpected setbacks. Akindunbi recalled receiving a “B” in a course he expected to excel in, which temporarily lowered his CGPA from 4.99 to 4.97. Rather than giving up, he used the experience to strengthen his focus and returned stronger, ultimately raising his CGPA to 4.98.

Staying Consistent and Building a Legacy

Consistency was the key to Akindunbi’s success. Despite immense pressure and high expectations from peers, he focused on his personal growth and academic goals. His dedication and perseverance have now become an inspiration to other students, demonstrating that discipline, mentorship, and resilience can overcome financial, personal, and academic challenges.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Akindunbi hopes his story will encourage students from all backgrounds to strive for excellence. By maintaining consistency and embracing opportunities for learning and growth, he believes other young Nigerians can also achieve exceptional results and set new benchmarks for success.
