FUNAAB First-Class Graduate Shares Journey of Faith, Focus, and Determination

At just 19 years old, Adejare Daniel graduated with a First-Class Degree in Computer Science from the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB). His story is one of early ambition, deep faith, and unwavering commitment to excellence.
In this exclusive interview, Daniel shares how his upbringing, mindset, and passion for technology shaped his remarkable academic success.
A Strong Foundation and Supportive Background
Daniel hails from Ogun State and grew up in a middle-class home where education was held in the highest regard. Both of his parents are educationists, and their emphasis on discipline, consistency, and academic excellence guided his path.
“My parents played a huge role in shaping my drive for success,” he said. “They taught me that hard work and faith go hand in hand. I was raised in a Christian home, and I believe everything I’ve achieved is by God’s grace.”
Gaining Admission at 15: A Bold Beginning
In 2021, at just 15 years old, Daniel gained admission into FUNAAB to study Computer Science. Initially, he had considered Mathematics or Chemical Engineering but switched paths after his father noticed his growing interest in computing.
“That decision changed everything for me,” Daniel said. “It opened my eyes to the world of software development and problem-solving.”
While studying, he began building a career in software development, creating several projects for startups and small businesses — practical experiences that strengthened his classroom learning.
Adjusting to University Life as a Teenager
Entering university at 15 came with challenges. “It was intimidating at first,” he admitted. “Most people were much older, and I felt out of place initially. But over time, I adapted, made friends, and grew confident.”
His strong foundation in Mathematics and Physics gave him an advantage, especially in his first year. Gradually, he found balance between academics and social life, staying focused on his goals.
Parental Encouragement Without Pressure
Although both parents were educators, Daniel explained that they never pressured him to outperform others. “They celebrated every little win,” he said. “My dad always told me, ‘Do your best and let God handle the rest.’ That mindset kept me grounded and helped me enjoy learning.”
Awards and Academic Recognition
Daniel’s brilliance didn’t go unnoticed. He was recognized as the Best Student at both 100 and 200 levels, earning several departmental awards for outstanding performance.
He recalled a tough moment in his 400 level when his CGPA dropped slightly. “It was one of my lowest points academically. But I pushed myself harder, recovered, and finished strong,” he said. “Reclaiming my First-Class position was a proud moment for me and my family.”
The Unforgettable Moment of Graduation
“I remember the day my final results were released,” he said with a smile. “I was at work when I checked my result. Seeing that I maintained a First Class brought tears to my eyes. Hearing my name among the top graduating students during the induction ceremony was an unforgettable moment of joy and fulfillment.”
Motivation and Mindset for Success
For Daniel, consistency and faith were key. “I started strong, and I wanted to finish strong,” he explained. “There were times I felt tired, but I reminded myself how far I’d come. My motivation came from my parents, mentors, and friends who believed in me.”
He also emphasized the importance of maintaining balance: “It’s not about being perfect, but about staying focused and intentional.”
Life Lessons from University
Beyond academics, Daniel believes university life shaped his character and interpersonal skills. “I learned that networking is powerful. Most of my career opportunities came from classmates and friends. I also discovered that failure isn’t final — it’s feedback,” he said.
He added that humility, resilience, and faith in God’s timing were among his biggest lessons. “Success without humility is incomplete,” he said.
Future Plans
Daniel plans to pursue postgraduate studies while advancing his career in software development. His long-term goal is to contribute to technological innovation in Nigeria and beyond.
“I’m passionate about using computing to solve real-life problems,” he said. “I want to research and develop solutions that impact society positively.”
Advice to Students and Young Scholars
“To every student out there,” Daniel said, “you can enjoy your social life and still excel academically. Find your balance, stay disciplined, and never stop praying. Success doesn’t come overnight, but with persistence and the right mindset, everything will fall into place.”
