NECO Opens Examination Centre in the UK for Nigerians in the Diaspora

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has announced the establishment of a new examination centre in London, United Kingdom, to serve Nigerians living abroad who wish to complete their secondary education or obtain equivalent qualifications.
The new development marks a major step in NECO’s global expansion strategy aimed at providing credible and accessible assessment opportunities to Nigerians in the diaspora.
NECO Expands Its Reach to the United Kingdom
NECO’s Registrar and Chief Executive, Professor Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, made the announcement during the Education Matters Conference UK 2025, revealing that the initiative was launched in partnership with Barnfield Education Ltd.
According to Wushishi, the move is designed to give Nigerian students and adult learners in the UK a pathway to complete their education under the Nigerian curriculum.
“Our objective is to provide credible and accessible examination opportunities for Nigerians residing abroad, in line with the Federal Government’s education policy on inclusivity and global engagement,” he said in a statement released by NECO’s Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Azeez Sani.
A Strategic Move Toward Global Recognition
Professor Wushishi explained that the new Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) centre in London is part of NECO’s broader goal to extend its international footprint.
Currently, NECO conducts examinations in seven countries, including Saudi Arabia, while new centres are awaiting approval in Egypt and Burkina Faso.
He emphasized that the London centre would empower Nigerians abroad, enhance national pride, and strengthen the global recognition of NECO certificates.
Already, several top universities, such as Birmingham City University and Leeds Trinity University in the UK, as well as institutions in the United States, Canada, India, China, and Russia, recognize NECO certificates for admission purposes.
UK Education Ministry Commends NECO
In a goodwill message, Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, lauded NECO for the initiative, describing it as a major milestone in ensuring that no Nigerian child, home or abroad, is left behind.
He noted that the effort aligns with the Ministry’s commitment to leveraging the Nigerian diaspora as an important resource for educational and national development.
Alternative Pathway for Nigerian Students in the UK
The Director of BEP Education and NECO’s UK partner, Dr. John Ibanga, said the new centre provides an alternative academic route for Nigerian students facing challenges within the British education system, especially those unable to obtain the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE).
“Many Nigerian children encounter barriers in the UK system that limit their progression.
This NECO SSCE Centre provides a recognised alternative for young learners and adults seeking academic or vocational advancement,” Dr. Ibanga explained.
Strengthening Nigeria’s Educational Presence Abroad
During a courtesy visit to the Nigerian High Commission in London, Professor Wushishi briefed officials about the establishment and accreditation of the new NECO centre.
The Head of Political Affairs at the Mission, Ambassador Eche Abu-Obe, praised NECO’s initiative, describing it as a “timely and commendable effort” that reflects Nigeria’s commitment to educational inclusivity and diaspora engagement.
“The Mission will collaborate with NECO to advance Nigeria’s educational and developmental goals in the United Kingdom,” he stated.
A New Era for Nigerians in the Diaspora
The launch of NECO’s UK examination centre represents more than just an expansion — it is a lifeline for thousands of Nigerians abroad who wish to reconnect with the Nigerian education system, gain recognized qualifications, and secure better global opportunities.
With NECO’s certificates already accepted by reputable institutions worldwide, this initiative not only bridges educational gaps but also enhances the international reputation of Nigeria’s examination system.
