FG Introduces New HND Programmes in AI, Cybersecurity, and Software Engineering

The Federal Government has launched new Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes in Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Software Engineering, and Networking. This move aims to align Nigeria’s technical education with global tech advancements and the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
According to Prof. Idris Bugaje, Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), the reforms are part of President Tinubu’s broader strategy to equip Nigerian youths with in-demand digital skills.
Key Highlights:
- Curriculum Update: Traditional HND programmes have been split into specialised skill areas. These are being implemented through the Nigeria Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF).
- Digital Accreditation: NBTE now uses an AI-powered accreditation platform to monitor academic quality, detect faculty duplication, and reduce malpractice in polytechnics. Schools must submit data digitally, reducing the need for physical assessments.
- Remote Assessment: Schools in areas with poor internet access will be reviewed by approved vendors who submit verification reports to NBTE.
- Governance and Oversight: New tools enhance transparency and reduce costs in accreditation processes.
- Academic Standards: Programmes are structured under the Minimum National Academic Standards (MNAS), focusing on faculty credentials, infrastructure, and training equipment.
Bugaje stated that embedding technology into education is key to boosting Nigeria’s global relevance and economic growth. These reforms are inspired by successful models in Southeast Asia.
