FG Insists All Teachers Must Be Registered With TRCN

The Federal Government has reaffirmed that no teacher will be allowed to practice in Nigeria without registration and licensing from the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN).
This was announced by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, in a statement released on Sunday through the ministry’s official X account.
According to the directive, the Federal Ministry of Education has redefined the roles of the TRCN and the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI) to improve teacher professionalism and strengthen the quality of education across the country.
Realigned Roles of TRCN and NTI
Under the new arrangement, the NTI will focus on in-service training and Community Professional Development programs for teachers, while the TRCN will take charge of regulating, licensing, and monitoring compliance among practitioners.
Dr. Alausa explained that the reforms cover teacher registration, professional development, welfare, compliance monitoring, and curriculum standards, adding that they are part of government’s efforts to deliver quality learning for every Nigerian child.
“No teacher will stand before a Nigerian classroom without TRCN registration and licensing. This guarantees competent and professional teaching for every child. Nigerian children deserve the best, and this reform is designed to ensure they get nothing less,” the minister said.
Certification Linked to School Accreditation
The minister further disclosed that beginning from 2027, only secondary schools—public or private—with properly certified teachers will be accredited to host national examinations, including WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, and NBIAS.
He stressed that schools failing to comply with the TRCN certification requirement risk losing their status as examination centres.
Dr. Alausa described the policy as a step towards sustainable reform, aimed at raising teaching standards, motivating educators, and ensuring that the nation’s education system keeps pace with global best practices.
