Federal Government Opens ₦1bn MSME Grants Application April 7 for Small Businesses

The Federal Government has announced plans to disburse over ₦1 billion in financial support to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) under the 2026 National MSME Awards, in a move aimed at boosting small business growth and economic development across Nigeria.
The disclosure was made by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Job Creation and MSMEs, Temitola Adekunle-Johnson, during a media briefing held in Abuja.
According to him, the application portal for the 2026 MSME Awards will officially open on April 7 and close on May 7, providing a one-month window for eligible businesses nationwide to submit their entries.
He explained that this year’s edition, themed “Renewed Hope for MSMEs,” will focus primarily on direct financial grants rather than physical rewards. The initiative marks a major shift from previous editions where prizes such as cars, shops, and houses were offered to winners.
Adekunle-Johnson stated that the new approach is designed to provide immediate financial relief and capital injection for small businesses, enabling them to scale operations, improve productivity, and create jobs.
He further revealed that, with the support of development partners, the government plans to distribute up to ₦1 billion in grants across multiple categories, ensuring that more entrepreneurs benefit from the programme beyond just top winners.
In addition to financial support, beneficiaries will gain access to structured mentorship programmes facilitated by relevant government agencies. These programmes will include business advisory services, access to new markets, and post-award support aimed at strengthening long-term business sustainability.
The initiative will also provide opportunities for outstanding MSMEs to participate in international trade exhibitions, giving Nigerian businesses global exposure and potential access to foreign investment.
The awards will recognise enterprises that demonstrate innovation, creativity, job creation, and effective use of technology across key sectors of the economy.
A representative of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, Sarah Ajayi, disclosed that about 12 categories will be featured in the 2026 edition. These include manufacturing, agriculture, textiles, creative industries, innovation, and beauty and wellness.
She emphasized that regulatory compliance will play a critical role in the selection process. Applicants are expected to submit proper documentation such as tax records, relevant certifications, and regulatory approvals.
In addition, participants must provide high-quality video presentations showcasing their production processes, value addition, and overall business impact.
The presidential aide acknowledged that previous editions recorded a number of low-quality applications but assured that efforts are being intensified to improve awareness and encourage more serious and competitive participation nationwide.
He also assured that the selection process will remain transparent and strictly merit-based, maintaining credibility and fairness throughout the programme.
The grand finale of the 2026 National MSME Awards is scheduled to hold on June 27, in commemoration of the global MSME Day, celebrated annually to highlight the contributions of small businesses to economic growth.
Stakeholders present at the briefing expressed strong support for the initiative, pledging collaboration to ensure credible selection, regulatory compliance, and effective post-award mentorship to drive sustainable growth for MSMEs across Nigeria.
