EU Launches €30 Million Grant Programme to Empower Nigerian Creatives and Strengthen Africa–Europe Innovation Networks

The European Union has unveiled a €30 million cultural initiative designed to empower Nigerian artists, strengthen creative networks, and deepen Africa–Europe cultural collaboration. The new programme, known as the Africa–Europe Partnerships for Culture (AEPC) Nigeria Cluster, was officially launched in Lagos as part of the EU’s long-term strategy to support sustainable development through creativity and cultural innovation.

According to the EU, the initiative, implemented by the Goethe-Institut, will expand international opportunities for Nigerian creatives—offering access to funding, training, partnerships, and exchange programmes across Sub-Saharan Africa and Europe.

Speaking at the launch, the EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, emphasized that culture remains a vital driver of economic opportunity, social inclusion, and global connectivity. He described the programme as a key element of the EU’s Global Gateway strategy, which aims to enhance people-to-people connections and promote shared prosperity.

He noted that the EU is committed to amplifying African voices and ensuring that creatives from every region of Nigeria gain international exposure. “Our goal is to create spaces where creative talents can grow without limits and where stories that often go unheard can find global recognition,” he said.

Mignot also highlighted other ongoing EU-funded cultural projects, including the €20 million Strengthening African-European Museum Partnerships and the upcoming €15 million Creative Africa programme, which will boost collaboration between audiovisual industries in both regions. He added that the EU continues to support Nigeria’s cultural policy development and smaller creative initiatives such as the Festival of Illustrators and the Eastern Nigeria Film Festival.

Reaffirming the EU’s commitment to supporting Nigerian creatives, he encouraged artists and cultural organisations to take advantage of new opportunities available under the AEPC programme by preparing strong proposals and collaborations.

The Director of the Goethe-Institut Nigeria, Nadine Siegert, described the launch as a major milestone in advancing artistic collaboration and cultural innovation between Africa and Europe. She praised Nigeria’s vibrant creative ecosystem, noting that the industry is increasingly gaining global recognition across sectors such as film, fashion, music, visual arts, and technology-driven creativity.

Siegert explained that the Goethe-Institut’s support is anchored on collaboration, capacity building, and widening access to creative resources. She noted that the institute aims to bridge gaps in funding, skills, and visibility while strengthening digital platforms, creative hubs, and training programmes to empower emerging and established artists.

Across West Africa, the AEPC initiative will support cultural cooperation among several countries including Ghana, Benin, Senegal, Mali, Côte d’Ivoire, Togo, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and others in partnership with the EU. The project targets the training of 250 professionals, support for 450 artists, networking opportunities for 48 festivals, and long-term growth of Africa–Europe cultural relations.

The initiative is expected to drive social and economic gains, expand global opportunities for Nigerian creatives, and strengthen the cultural bridge between both continents.
