Breaking: ASUP Chairman Forfeits Office

There was Confusion at Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic Unwana, Ebonyi state on Wednesday as governing council demote the Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) Unwana Poly chapter, Mr Paulinus Okoro from Academic staff to Non Teaching Staff.

According to a memo obtained by POLYTV, the school authority confirmed that Mr Okoro was Re-designated following his non compliance to obtain a Masters degree to his discipline.

The chairman has now been re-designated as a senior assistant Registrar and would no longer be recognized as a Teaching staff in the Polytechnic.

This was contained in a memo dated 15th June signed by the registrar,
Mrs. C. C. Igweonu  which reads,  “I write to inform you that Management at its 388 ” Regular Meeting held on Tuesday, 14 June, 2022 considered the Non – Compliance with Council decision on the three ( 3 ) years moratorium given to you to acquire an Academic Masters Degree relevant to your core discipline…..

“Management observed with dismay that you have refused to comply with Council decision….

“Management, therefore, approved that your employment in the Polytechnic as academic staff should be re – designated from Lecturer I to Senior Assistant Registrar ( SAR ) with effect from Tuesday, 14 June, 2022…

The statement added, “You are required to hand over every property in your possession to the Head , Department of General Studies and report to the Registrar for redeployment on or before Monday, 20 June , 2022.”

The Academic staff union of Polytechnic (ASUP) Unwana Poly Chapter, have been on strike for the past few weeks due to some of their demands which are yet to be met by the school management.

However, this development has caused confusion among students as some said that the designation of the lecturer by the school authority was meant to Suppress the Union (ASUP) from agitating for their demands.
