The Novo Nordisk Foundation is now accepting applications for its Emerging Investigator Grants Programme, aimed at supporting promising research leaders in Industrial Biotechnology and Environmental Biotechnology across the Nordic countries. This initiative is designed to empower talented scientists to address pressing challenges in biotechnology with innovative, scalable, and sustainable solutions.
Focus Areas for Research
Applicants are encouraged to propose research that tackles major industrial or environmental challenges through fundamental studies. Eligible projects may involve:
- Engineering biological systems or microorganisms for production
- Developing innovative bioproduction technologies
- Improving efficiency in biomanufacturing
- Applying biotechnology for environmental protection or ecosystem management
- Leveraging data science to advance biotechnology research
Grant Funding and Usage
Successful applicants can receive up to DKK 12.5 million over a five-year period. Funding can cover:
- Researcher salaries and staff wages
- PhD tuition fees
- Operational and laboratory expenses
- Equipment procurement
- Conference participation, travel, and publication costs
The research must commence between May 2026 and April 2027.
Eligibility Criteria
The grant targets early-career scientists at the level of senior postdoc, senior researcher, assistant professor, or newly appointed associate professor. Applicants should demonstrate the potential to establish an independent research program at a university or non-profit research institution in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, or Sweden.
Key eligibility requirements include:
- 4–8 years of post-PhD research experience
- Strong publication record
- Demonstrated research leadership potential
- Institutional support confirmed through a hosting letter from the department head
Applicants may submit one proposal per call, and co-applicants are not permitted. The principal investigator and team must be employed at the host institution throughout the grant period.
Evaluation and Selection
Proposals are assessed based on:
- Scientific quality and innovation
- Societal relevance and potential impact
- Applicant’s research track record and leadership capabilities
