Federal Government Grants Insufficient for Nigerian Universities – Experts Urge Alumni Support

Prof. Adebimpe Adenugba, Head of the Department of Sociology at the University of Ibadan, Oyo State, has highlighted the insufficiency of Federal Government grants to effectively run Nigerian universities. She made the statement while receiving solar inverter batteries donated to the department by the Class of 1995 alumni set.
Prof. Adenugba emphasized the vital role alumni associations play in enhancing the growth of universities, particularly in areas of funding, infrastructure, and academic development. She noted that the current economic challenges in Nigeria make it increasingly difficult for universities to rely solely on government allocations.
“The grant from the Federal Government is not enough to run the universities, given the prevailing economic situation. Relevant stakeholders, including alumni, must contribute to ensure the institutions have the necessary resources for academic excellence,” Adenugba stated.
Alumni Contributions as a Lifeline
Speaking alongside Prof. Adenugba, Prof. Adeyinka Aderinto praised the Class of 1995 for their consistent support to both the Department of Sociology and the broader university community.
“We recently received a donation from the graduating set of 1995, commemorating 30 years since their graduation. They contributed inverter batteries to support our department. This is not their first contribution; they have supported us multiple times in the past,” Prof. Aderinto said. He added that the department will continue to engage other alumni to ensure sustained support.
Babajide Akinfolajinmi, Chairman of the Class of 1995 Organizing Committee, explained that the donation reflects the alumni’s gratitude and commitment to their alma mater.
“Whatever achievements we have attained in life are rooted in this university and specifically the Department of Sociology. Giving back is our way of showing appreciation, and this donation marks the 30th anniversary of our graduation,” Akinfolajinmi said.
The Growing Need for Stakeholder Involvement
Experts agree that the future of Nigerian higher education increasingly depends on contributions from all stakeholders, including alumni, corporate organizations, and private benefactors. With government grants unable to meet the rising costs of infrastructure, learning resources, and technological needs, such partnerships have become essential for sustaining academic quality and institutional development.
Prof. Adenugba reiterated that universities must embrace innovative approaches to funding, urging alumni and other partners to actively support academic programs and infrastructure projects.
“The combined efforts of the Federal Government, university management, and external stakeholders are key to ensuring that Nigerian universities remain competitive and capable of delivering quality education,” she added.
The University of Ibadan’s recent example demonstrates how alumni engagement can supplement limited government funding, providing resources that directly enhance teaching, research, and learning experiences.
