Advantages and Disadvantages of Islamic Marriage in Nigeria

Islamic marriage, known as Nikkah, is one of the recognized forms of marriage in Nigeria, especially among Muslim communities. It is based on Islamic principles and guided by teachings from the Qur’an and Hadith. Unlike other marriage types, an Islamic wedding is not only a union of two individuals but also a spiritual contract rooted in faith, family, and community values.

Many Nigerians prefer Islamic marriage because it provides both religious and cultural recognition. However, just like every other type of marriage, it comes with its own strengths and challenges.

Advantages of Islamic Marriage in Nigeria

Islamic marriage is conducted under the guidance of religious leaders and in accordance with Islamic law. Couples begin their union with prayers, which gives them spiritual covering and strengthens their faith as they build their home.

If the marriage is not registered with the government, it may lack legal recognition outside the Islamic community. This can cause complications in matters such as inheritance, property claims, and divorce settlements.

Islamic marriages often involve extended families in the process. In some cases, this can lead to interference in the couple’s private life, causing disagreements and tension in the marriage.
