Zamfara Polytechnic Vows to Tackle Drugs Abuse Among Students
Rector of Abdu Gusau Polytechnic Talata-Mafara, Associate Professor Sha’ayau Shehu, the (Magajin Rafin Mafara, and Dan-Iyan Gummi) decried over the high level of drugs and substance abuse prevalent among youths in the society.
This was stated by Magajin Rafin Mafara on Wednesday during a general orientation lecture for the institution’s 24th matriculation ceremony in Talata Mafara.
The Rector repeated the need in his yet another joint meeting session with the War Against Drug Abuse Committee (WADAC) and War Against Drug Abuse Club (WADA-C), at his office in the Polytechnic Talata-Mafara.
The meeting held was aimed at mapping out strategies, approaches and interventions capable of addressing the problem within the institution.

The Associate Professor Sha’aya, reaffirms that more practical measures will be applied to address the increase in drugs and substance abuse in the institution particularly among the students at all levels.
The War Against Drug Abuse Committee (WADAC) and War Against Drug Abuse Club (WADA-C) were founded by Associate Prof. Sha’aya Shehu in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The Polytechnic Rector further stated that the institution is collaborating with the relevant agencies and other critical stakeholders to create more structures needed to deter the harmful habit and practice of drug abuse.

The Rector upholds that the club will apprise students about the numerous risks associated with substance abuse while also putting in place mechanisms to aid students in overcoming the issue, with assistance from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), students, and staff.
“I should point out that when trying to address youth vulnerabilities, substance abuse is like the unfathomable elephant in the room. Even in today’s society, we see far too many young people, including women, indulging in this boorish behavior.”
Magajin Rafi, who emphasized the role of education in a student’s mental development, told the students and other stakeholders that the institution would no longer serve as a cover for staff or students to abuse drugs.
Sha’ayau urged students to “As a result, anyone who knows where such illegalities are taking place should endeavor to report such a person, student, or the selling point, hence, the law will be enforced.”
Some of the prominent persons who attended the event included the two Deputy Rectors, the Deputy Rector Academic and Administration, the Registrar of the institution, the Directors of Health, Exams, SIWES, Works & Services, and Chairman of the War Against Drug Abuse Committee (WADAC).

Others are the former acting rector, two former Deputy rectors, ASUP Chairman, the Director of Academic Planning, the Dean of Students Affairs, and the Dean School of Environmental Studies.
