Think Twice Before Choosing Pharmaceutical Technology in a Polytechnic—Here’s Why

Are you considering a career in the pharmaceutical field and thinking about enrolling in a Polytechnic to study Pharmaceutical Technology? Before you take that leap, it’s essential to understand the current challenges and controversies surrounding this course in Nigeria. Many students who have pursued this path find themselves facing unexpected hurdles that could have been avoided with better information.

The Current State of Pharmaceutical Technology in Polytechnics

Pharmaceutical Technology programs in Nigerian Polytechnics have been under scrutiny and face significant challenges. The Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN), in collaboration with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), announced an end to the training of pharmaceutical technologists by polytechnics and other institutions in Nigeria . This move has left many graduates in a state of uncertainty regarding their qualifications and career prospects.

PCN’s Stance on Polytechnic Graduates

The PCN has taken a firm position that Pharmaceutical Technology is a postgraduate program meant for those who have already obtained a degree in Pharmacy. Consequently, industries have been instructed to stop employing Polytechnic graduates with a background in Pharmaceutical Technology. This directive has significantly impacted the employability of thousands of graduates who have completed this course.

NBTE’s Contradictory Position

Despite the PCN’s directive, the NBTE had, in a circular dated April 7, 2024, resolved to discontinue the award of HND certificate in Pharmaceutical Technology in all institutions under its control . However, a Federal High Court in Abuja barred the NBTE and PCN from abolishing the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Pharmaceutical Technology . This legal tussle has created confusion and instability for current and prospective students.

The Impact on Graduates

Graduates of Pharmaceutical Technology from Polytechnics find themselves in a precarious position. With the PCN’s refusal to recognize their qualifications, many are unable to secure employment in the pharmaceutical industry. This lack of recognition not only affects their career prospects but also undermines the time and resources invested in their education.

Alternatives to Consider

Given the current challenges, it’s advisable to consider alternative educational paths that offer better prospects:

1. Pharmacy Technician Programs

These are recognized by the PCN and provide a clear pathway to employment in the pharmaceutical sector. Institutions like the Oyo State College of Health Science and Technology offer accredited programs in this field.

2. University Degree in Pharmacy

Pursuing a degree in Pharmacy from a recognized university ensures that your qualifications are acknowledged by regulatory bodies and the industry.

3. Other Polytechnic Courses

If you prefer the Polytechnic route, consider courses like Food Technology or Science Laboratory Technology, which currently do not face the same recognition issues.

The Need for Resolution

9japolytv thinks the ongoing conflict between the PCN and NBTE is a lack of coordination between regulatory bodies and educational institutions. It’s imperative for all stakeholders, including the rectors of Polytechnics, NBTE, and PCN, to come together and resolve these issues to prevent further harm to students’ futures.

Choosing a course of study is a significant decision that can shape your career and future. Given the current uncertainties surrounding Pharmaceutical Technology programs in Polytechnics, it’s crucial to make informed choices. Opting for recognized and accredited programs will not only provide better employment opportunities but also ensure that your efforts and investments in education are worthwhile.

In conclusion, before enrolling in any program, conduct thorough research, consult with professionals in the field, and consider the long-term implications of your choice. Your future self will thank you for making a well-informed decision today.
