Postgraduate Options After HND – What You Can Do Next
Completing your Higher National Diploma (HND) can feel like both an achievement and a roadblock. On one hand, you’ve gained practical skills and industry-ready experience. On the other hand, it’s common to face rejection or limited access when trying to further your education. For many HND holders, the big question is: what’s the next step after HND if you want to pursue postgraduate studies?
The assumption that only university degree holders can access postgraduate education is slowly changing. Today, there are more structured pathways for HND graduates to continue their academic journey without having to start from scratch. Whether you aim to gain a postgraduate diploma, transition into a master’s program, or eventually earn a PhD, there are doors you can walk through—if you know where to look and how to position yourself.
Why Postgraduate Study Matters After HND
Many job roles, especially in the formal and international sectors, now require postgraduate qualifications for senior positions. Employers are increasingly focused on specialization, advanced certifications, and industry-relevant expertise. A postgraduate degree adds weight to your credentials and helps bridge the gap between your HND and global academic standards.
It also opens up teaching, research, and consultancy opportunities that may be out of reach with an HND alone. If you’re planning to work abroad or in competitive sectors like tech, finance, education, or engineering, postgraduate qualifications will give you an advantage.
Can You Apply for a Master’s Program with Just HND?
The answer is both yes and no—depending on the country, the institution, and the course of study. In some cases, universities abroad or even in Nigeria may not accept HND holders directly into master’s programs. However, this doesn’t mean postgraduate studies are completely off-limits.
Some universities accept HND holders into Postgraduate Diploma (PGD or PGDE) programs first. After completing this diploma—which usually lasts between 9 to 12 months—you can then qualify to apply for a master’s program. This route is common in Nigeria and some UK institutions.
What Are the Postgraduate Options Available?
HND graduates are not limited to just one route. There are several postgraduate options you can consider based on your academic goals, finances, and time commitment.
Postgraduate Diploma (PGD)
This is the most popular path for HND holders in Nigeria and some parts of the UK. A PGD bridges the gap between an HND and a full bachelor’s degree. Once completed, it makes you eligible to apply for a master’s degree in most universities.
PGD programs are usually offered in Nigerian universities like the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), and others. Fields such as education, engineering, business, and social sciences offer PGD programs designed for HND graduates.

Bachelor’s Top-Up Degree
This route allows you to upgrade your HND to a full bachelor’s degree, after which you can proceed to a master’s program. It’s very common in the UK and increasingly available through online universities. A top-up degree usually takes 1 to 2 years and is ideal for those who want to be eligible for international postgraduate admission without needing a PGD.

Pre-Master’s Programs
Some European and Asian universities offer pre-master’s courses specifically for HND holders or those with lower qualifications. These programs usually run for a semester or two and are meant to prepare students academically for postgraduate studies. Once completed, you can seamlessly progress into a master’s degree in that institution.
Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) or Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip)
In some countries like the UK and Australia, PGCert and PGDip programs are shorter than master’s degrees but still considered postgraduate qualifications. They can serve as stepping stones to a full master’s degree or offer specialized training for certain careers.
Distance Learning Postgraduate Programs
For HND graduates who are working or unable to travel, online postgraduate options are now widely available. Universities like the University of Derby, Arden University, and the University of Portsmouth offer online PGD and master’s programs that accept HND holders, either directly or through top-up routes.

Nigerian Universities Accepting HND for PGD
Some Nigerian institutions known for admitting HND holders into PGD programs include:
- University of Lagos (UNILAG)
- University of Benin (UNIBEN)
- Ahmadu Bello University (ABU)
- Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK)
- University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN)
- Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO)
- Bayero University Kano (BUK)
- Ambrose Alli University (AAU)
- Lagos State University (LASU)
- Rivers State University (RSU)
These schools offer PGD courses in areas like management, education, sciences, ICT, engineering, and public administration.
Should You Choose PGD or Top-Up?
If you want to remain in Nigeria for your studies or you’re looking for a quicker path to a master’s degree within the country, a PGD is often the right option. It’s shorter and cheaper compared to traveling abroad. However, if your long-term plan involves relocating, studying abroad, or working internationally, then a bachelor’s top-up program may serve you better.
It’s also important to note that some foreign universities may not fully recognize a Nigerian PGD as equivalent to a UK or Canadian bachelor’s degree. In such cases, a top-up degree remains the safer route if your goal is a master’s program outside Nigeria.

Can You Progress to a PhD After an HND?
Not directly. However, the path is still open through gradual progression. You’ll need to first complete a PGD or top-up degree, then a master’s, and finally apply for a PhD. Some students have followed this exact route and successfully earned their doctorates, both in Nigeria and abroad.
Academic progression from HND to PhD may take longer, but it’s possible with planning, patience, and dedication.
Things to Keep in Mind
Before choosing any postgraduate option, you need to carefully consider the following:
- Accreditation: Make sure the program is recognized both locally and internationally.
- Entry Requirements: Check the specific eligibility criteria for HND holders.
- Duration: Know how long it will take and whether it fits your goals.
- Cost: Compare tuition and living expenses, especially for international programs.
- Career Impact: Choose a program that enhances your prospects in your field.
Having an HND doesn’t mean the end of your academic growth. If anything, it can be the beginning of a smarter and more intentional journey. With the right choice—PGD, top-up, or even direct master’s—you can reach your academic and career goals without having to start over. The key is knowing your options and acting on them. Many graduates have moved from HND to becoming postgraduates, and you can too.
