Places Where Estate Management Students Can Do Their SIWES/Industrial Training (I.T)
Industrial Training (IT) or the Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is an essential component of the curriculum for Estate Management students in Nigeria. It provides students with hands-on experience and exposure to real-world scenarios, bridging the gap between academic learning and professional practice.
Here’s a list of some of the best places where Estate Management students can undergo their SIWES and Industrial Training in Nigeria.
1. Real Estate Firms
Real estate firms are one of the primary places for Estate Management students to gain practical experience. These firms deal with various aspects of property management, sales, and valuation. Interning at a real estate firm allows students to understand the intricacies of property transactions, client management, and real estate marketing.
- Examples: Jide Taiwo & Co., Ubosi Eleh & Co., Diya, Fatimilehin & Co.
2. Property Development Companies
Property development companies are involved in the planning, construction, and selling of residential and commercial properties. Interning with such companies provides students with insights into project management, property development processes, and feasibility studies.
- Examples: UAC Property Development Company, Lekki Gardens, Urban Shelter Limited.
3. Estate Surveying and Valuation Firms
Estate surveying and valuation firms specialize in property valuation, land surveying, and property management. These firms are perfect for students who want to focus on the technical aspects of estate management, such as property appraisal and valuation methods.
- Examples: Knight Frank, Osas & Oseji, Akin Olawore & Co.
4. Government Agencies
Several government agencies and parastatals are involved in estate management and urban planning. These agencies offer a unique opportunity for students to understand the regulatory aspects of estate management and the role of government in real estate development.
- Examples: Federal Housing Authority (FHA), Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Lagos State Land Use and Allocation Committee (LUAC).
5. Banks and Financial Institutions
Banks and financial institutions often have real estate and property management departments. Interning in these departments can expose students to the financial side of estate management, including mortgage financing, property investment analysis, and real estate economics.
- Examples: First Bank of Nigeria, Zenith Bank, United Bank for Africa (UBA).
6. Facility Management Companies
Facility management companies focus on the maintenance and management of buildings and other infrastructure. These companies are ideal for students who are interested in the operational aspects of estate management, such as facility maintenance, energy management, and environmental sustainability.
- Examples: Alpha Mead Facilities, Briscoe Properties, Global PFI Limited.
7. Educational and Research Institutions
Some Estate Management students may choose to undertake their SIWES in educational and research institutions. These institutions provide opportunities to engage in research projects, surveys, and academic work related to estate management and urban planning.
