Otemu Foundation Offers ₦800,000 Annual Education Funding to Nigerian Undergraduates

The Otemu Educational Foundation has launched a life-changing scholarship initiative aimed at providing educational opportunities for brilliant but financially challenged students in Delta State.
At a special induction ceremony held at Western Delta University, Oghara, the foundation formally welcomed its first set of scholarship beneficiaries for the 2025/2026 academic session. Thirteen outstanding students were selected through a four-stage screening process out of 475 applicants from across the state.
According to a statement from the foundation, the scholarship program was established to ensure that talented students, regardless of financial background, have access to quality education and the resources needed to reach their potential.
The Otemu Educational Foundation, founded by Chief James Ibori in 2024, was created to support students from low-income families who have demonstrated academic excellence but lack financial means. The foundation’s broader vision is to promote fairness, equal access, and empowerment through education.
During the induction event, which was attended by academic leaders, community representatives, and parents of the beneficiaries, Ibori emphasized that the initiative was built on the principle of justice and empowerment rather than charity.
He stated, “This foundation exists to empower those who have earned their place but lacked the means to claim it. We believe education remains the most powerful tool to break the cycle of poverty and transform communities. By investing in young minds, we are shaping the leaders of tomorrow and driving development across Delta State.”
Each selected scholar will receive a comprehensive financial package that includes full tuition, accommodation, and other fees, along with a living stipend of ₦800,000 per academic year. The beneficiaries are enrolled in various departments at Western Delta University, including Computer Science, Business Administration, Mass Communication, Law, and Environmental Science.
Programme Coordinator, Isioghene Eyikimi, described the scholarship as a platform for leadership and personal development. She noted that beyond financial support, the initiative includes mentorship programs and skill development opportunities to help students build confidence and contribute meaningfully to society.
“This scholarship is more than just funding; it’s a message of hope. It shows that where you start in life does not determine how far you can go,” Eyikimi said.
One of the beneficiaries, Favour Egbunowor, who spoke on behalf of the scholars, expressed gratitude and pledged to uphold the foundation’s values through academic excellence and community service.
“We are grateful for this opportunity and commit to making the most of it. We will learn, lead, and contribute to a better Delta State,” she said.
The Otemu Educational Foundation also announced plans to expand its scholarship reach in the coming years. Future cycles are expected to cover more students and include additional categories such as vocational and technical training programs to accommodate youths who want to pursue professional skills.
The foundation encouraged corporate organizations, philanthropists, and public-spirited Nigerians to partner in supporting its vision of improving access to education and reducing financial barriers for students across Delta State.
This initiative comes at a time when many Nigerian students are struggling with rising tuition fees, limited financial aid, and the economic challenges affecting tertiary education. By sponsoring promising students from disadvantaged backgrounds, the foundation aims to close the education gap and promote inclusive growth.
The mission of the Otemu Educational Foundation aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education), which promotes equal learning opportunities for all, regardless of social or economic status.
With education costs increasing and financial support declining, this scholarship initiative represents a vital step in ensuring that no brilliant student is left behind due to poverty. Through consistent investment in education, the foundation is not only changing individual lives but also contributing to the long-term development of communities in Delta State and beyond.
