NSUK Tackles Climate Change with Tree Planting Campaign.

The Nasarawa State University, Keffi, in conjunction with the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria, formally inaugurated the Green Campus Initiative and commencement of the two hectares NSUK Forest Arboretum at the second gate of the Main Campus of the University recently.

The occasion which is the first of its kind in any University in Nigeria witnessed the planting of over two thousand five hundred indigenous multipurpose tree species.

In his welcome remark, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Suleiman Bala Mohammed thanked the convener, Professor Edem Eniang for aligning his thoughts with the vision he had in his road map of the University when he assumed duty as VC some four years ago to turn the various campuses of the University into Eco-friendly campuses. He stated that already a lot of funds and actions have been committed to the Green Campus Initiative and the tree-planting campaign will be replicated on all campuses of the University.

Earlier, the convener of the event Professor Edem Enang of the Department of Zoology thanked the Vice-Chancellor for the unwavering support he has lent to the Green Campus Initiative. He urged dignitaries to nurture the trees they will plant stressing that by that singular action, they will mitigate the effects of climate change which he noted is already upon us, and needs immediate action to control its devastating impact.

The event which was organized with the active collaboration of the Physical Planning Unit of the University witnessed the planting of individual trees by the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Suleiman Bala Mohammed, some members of the Governing Council of the University, Barrister Labaran Magaji, and Professor Alizaga, followed by other Principal Officers of the University.

Other dignitaries who planted trees at the occasion were the Director-General of the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria, Professor Zakariya Yaduma, the Conservator General of the National Parks Service of Nigeria Dr. Ali Goni, who represented ACG Oladipo, and the President of the Forestry Association of Nigeria, Dr. Abiodun Nurudeen Afolabi ably represented by Dr. Saminu Ado amongst other environmental enthusiasts who graced and planted trees at the occasion.
