The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has confirmed that the University of Ilorin (Unilorin) is now in full compliance and in good standing with the agency after successfully clearing all outstanding backlogs related to student loan processes.
This update was disclosed by Mallam Mustapha Iyal, NELFUND’s Executive Director of Operations, during an interview with journalists in Ilorin.
According to Iyal, the institution’s pending obligations have been addressed, and the final tranche of payments is scheduled for clearance before the end of the week.

NELFUND Clarifies Earlier Reports on Unilorin
The NELFUND executive noted that this development overrides earlier reports suggesting that the University of Ilorin was involved in cases of illegal student deductions. He clarified that such claims were based on misinformation and have since been resolved through proper data submission and verification.
“This development supersedes and nullifies the earlier report which listed the university as being involved in students’ illegal deductions. That was indeed what prompted them to submit their data, and we cleared their backlog,” Iyal explained.
He emphasized that NELFUND remains committed to maintaining transparent and accountable relationships with all tertiary institutions, ensuring that students continue to benefit from the Federal Government’s education loan initiative without unnecessary delays or confusion.
Unilorin Management Reacts to the Allegations
In response, the Director of Student Affairs at the University of Ilorin, Dr. Alex Akanmu, also dismissed the earlier report, describing it as false and misleading.
Akanmu attributed the misinformation to “mischief makers” and clarified that the institution has been working closely with NELFUND to ensure smooth operations and timely data submissions for all its students.
“The claim of Unilorin’s involvement in illegal student deductions was baseless. It was misinformation that has already been cleared with NELFUND,” Akanmu stated.
NELFUND Reaffirms Commitment to Transparency
The Nigerian Education Loan Fund continues to strengthen its collaboration with accredited tertiary institutions nationwide to ensure that the student loan system operates efficiently.
By verifying and updating student data through the NELFUND Student Verification Portal, the agency seeks to prevent administrative bottlenecks, ensure accountability, and maintain trust among students, parents, and school authorities.
The agency also reiterated that universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education must continue to adhere strictly to NELFUND’s operational standards to ensure that qualified students can seamlessly access interest-free education loans.
The clearance of Unilorin’s backlogs signals an important milestone in NELFUND’s ongoing efforts to stabilize and streamline the student loan disbursement process. It reinforces confidence in the loan system, ensuring that students’ educational funding is protected from mismanagement or delay.
As the 2025/2026 academic session approaches, NELFUND’s proactive measures—including verification exercises and institutional collaboration—are expected to make the education loan system more transparent, reliable, and accessible to all eligible Nigerian students.
