NELFUND Reopens Student Loan Application Portal — Schools Urged to Update Records Before January Deadline

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has announced the reopening of its student loan application portal for the 2025/2026 academic session, with the portal set to remain open until January 2026.
In preparation for the reopening, all accredited tertiary institutions across Nigeria — universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and monotechnics — have been instructed to update and upload the records of both new and returning students on the NELFUND Student Verification Portal.
According to a statement released by Mrs. Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, the Director of Strategic Communications at NELFUND, this measure aims to ensure a seamless and transparent verification process for all applicants when the loan application portal officially opens.
Institutions Must Upload Accurate Student Data
The statement emphasized that institutions play a critical role in the success of the student loan initiative, which was introduced by the Federal Government to make higher education more affordable for Nigerian students.
“Only students whose details have been duly uploaded and verified by their respective institutions will be eligible to apply for and benefit from the Education Loan Scheme,” NELFUND said.
All institutions have been urged to begin and complete the upload process promptly, designating competent officers to handle the task in line with the technical guidelines provided by the agency.
Why This Update Is Important
NELFUND noted that the verification and data upload exercise will help prevent errors, duplication, or fraudulent applications during the loan process. The agency also stressed that no eligible student should be left behind, as the Fund works to expand access to quality education through financial support.
This move aligns with the Federal Government’s broader vision to empower young Nigerians through inclusive education financing, ensuring that financial challenges do not stop any qualified student from pursuing their academic dreams.
How Students Can Benefit from NELFUND Loans
Once the portal officially opens, eligible students will be able to apply for interest-free education loans to cover tuition fees, accommodation, and other academic expenses.
Applicants must ensure that their details match the information submitted by their institutions. Any discrepancy in names, matric numbers, or admission details could delay approval or disqualify the applicant.
