NELFUND for Private University Students: What You Need to Know

If you’re studying at a private university in Nigeria, you might have heard about NELFUND and wondered if it could help cover your tuition and living expenses. Here’s the reality: private university students are currently not eligible for NELFUND loans.

NELFUND is a government-backed loan scheme designed to support students in public tertiary institutions, including federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. Unfortunately, private universities do not fall under this program.

Why Private Universities Are Excluded

NELFUND is funded by the federal government to help students in public institutions where tuition is subsidized. Private universities operate independently and set their own fees, which is why NELFUND cannot provide funding for students in these schools.

What Private University Students Can Do

Even though NELFUND is off the table, there are still ways to manage tuition and living expenses at private universities:

  • Scholarships and grants: Check if your school offers merit-based or need-based financial aid.

  • Bank education loans: Many banks in Nigeria offer student loans specifically for private university students.

  • Flexible payment plans: Some universities allow you to pay tuition in installments over the academic year.

  • Part-time jobs or internships: Earn extra income while studying to cover personal and academic expenses.

Tips to Avoid Financial Stress

  1. Confirm funding options early: Speak with your university’s bursary or financial aid office.

  2. Plan your budget: Know your tuition deadlines, accommodation costs, and living expenses.

  3. Explore multiple funding sources: Combining scholarships, bank loans, and part-time work can make a big difference.

  4. Stay organized: Keep track of all financial documents and payment schedules to avoid late fees.

While it’s disappointing that private university students cannot access NELFUND, there are still practical ways to manage school fees and living costs without falling behind academically.
