The Federal College of Freshwater Fisheries Technology (FCFFT) Baga is located in Baga, Kukawa Local Government, about 210km northeast of Maiduguri Borno state.
The Federal College of Freshwater Fisheries Technology (FCFFT) Baga is located in Baga, Kukawa Local Government, about 210km north east of Maiduguri Borno state. It lies in the Sahel region of Nigeria which is characterized by very low yearly rainfall of less than 400mm and extreme weather conditions. Lake Chad which is one of the largest natural inland lakes in the world is located in this region.
The Lake is highly productive but was characterized by irrational exploitation, lack of adequate knowledge of harvesting of stock, preservation; processing and storage further necessitating the establishment of the College along its shores in 1977.
The Federal College of Freshwater Fisheries Technology, Baga was established by the Federal Government of Nigeria under Lake Chad Research Institute in 1977 as a monotechnic institution to provide middle level manpower in Fisheries. The College was established by the proxy of the Research Institute order of 1975 (Supplement to official gazette No. 61, Vol. 62 of 11th December 1975 part B) which established Lake Chad Research Institute (its former parent institute).
