The Federal Polytechnic Nekede Owerri MCATI Implementation Committee recently submitted an interim implementation report to the Rector and Management of the institution. The seven-man committee with Chairman as Chief A. N. Obi (FCA) the immediate past Bursar and current Director Special Duties in the institution handed over the report to the Rector and his management team in the Rector’s office.
Other Committee members present were the current Bursar of the institution, Mr. V.N. Anyanwuocha (FCA), Mr. C.A. Osondu (ACA), Mrs. I.G. Ukwu (ACA), Mr. O.S. Onyenakuchi (ACA) and Mr. Marcel Anaeme (ACA).
The Rector, Rev. Canon Engr. Dr. Michael Arimanwa who received the report with delight, thanked the Chairman and members of the Committee for a job well done and reiterated the commitment and support of Management in the implementation of the recommendations set out in the report. He further encouraged the Committee not to relent in ensuring that the Polytechnic receives the maximum benefits from the implementation of the MCATI Scheme.
The Management of Federal Polytechnic Nekede had signed a Memorandum of Understanding otherwise known as Mutual Cooperation Agreement with Tertiary Institutions (MCATI) with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) in September last year.
The ICAN MCATI Scheme is designed to enhance the quality of accounting education among partnering tertiary institutions in Nigeria by improving the training curriculum of their accountancy departments such that accounting students of those institutions become eligible for enhanced exemptions in ICAN qualifying examinations. Therefore, Accounting students of partnering tertiary institutions, upon graduation are immediately qualified to sit for the final stage of the institute’s professional examinations.
Following the signing of the MCATI agreement between the Management of Federal Polytechnic Nekede and ICAN in September, 2020, the Management set up a seven-man committee to drive the implementation of the MCATI Scheme in the Polytechnic.
In another similar development, the Chairman and members of the executive of ICAN Owerri District Society paid a visit to the Management of the Polytechnic to solicit their support for the establishment of an ICAN Students’ Special Projects Centre (SSPC) for Imo State. In particular, the Chairman of Owerri District Society, Mazi Nnamdi Okonkwo (FCA) requested the Management to avail the District some classrooms and administrative office space within the Polytechnic for the take-off of the centre.
The SSPC is a project of ICAN where highly subsidized tuition centres are established in various locations across the country to prepare candidates for the institute’s professional examinations.
In his response, the Rector thanked the District Society for their visit, indicated willingness of the institution to identify with the SSPC project and promised to make available the required facilities to enable the scheme take-off in the institution. He noted that such a Centre will provide an adequate and cost effective alternative for other students of non-accounting
background willing to qualify as Chartered Accountants.
He further requested the District Society to liaise with the national body of ICAN and come up with relevant Memorandum of Understanding which will be executed before the commencement of the SSPC project in the institution.
