Difference Between Malaria and Lassa Fever Symptoms

Malaria and Lassa fever are two illnesses that affect many Nigerians every year. Both diseases begin with fever and weakness, which is why many people confuse one for the other. Misdiagnosis often delays treatment, leading to severe health complications. Knowing how to tell the difference between malaria and Lassa fever symptoms helps Nigerians seek the right treatment on time and avoid unnecessary risks.

Nigerians Confuse Malaria and Lassa Fever

The early stages of both diseases present with similar signs such as fever, headache, and general tiredness. Since malaria is more common, many Nigerians assume every fever is malaria and start self-medication. Unfortunately, this mistake can be deadly if the illness turns out to be Lassa fever.

Symptoms of Malaria

Malaria is caused by parasites transmitted through mosquito bites. Symptoms usually appear within 7 to 14 days after infection. Common signs include:

  • High fever that comes and goes in cycles
  • Headaches and sweating
  • Chills and shivering
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Muscle and joint pain

Severe malaria may also cause confusion, seizures, or difficulty breathing if left untreated.

Symptoms of Lassa Fever

Lassa fever is a viral infection spread mainly by rats and contaminated food or household items. The symptoms may appear gradually, usually 6 to 21 days after exposure. Early signs include:

  • Persistent fever that does not improve with malaria drugs
  • General weakness and severe tiredness
  • Sore throat with pain when swallowing
  • Muscle and chest pain
  • Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
  • Loss of appetite

As the illness progresses, symptoms may become more serious, such as:

  • Bleeding from gums, nose, or other openings
  • Swelling of the face and neck
  • Hearing loss in some survivors

How Malaria Symptoms Differ from Lassa Fever

  1. Response to Drugs – Malaria improves quickly after starting ACT drugs, while Lassa fever does not respond to malaria treatment.
  2. Onset of Symptoms – Malaria often develops faster with sudden fever and chills, but Lassa fever begins gradually with persistent fever and tiredness.
  3. Unique Signs – Sore throat, chest pain, and bleeding are more linked to Lassa fever, while shivering and sweating are more typical of malaria.
  4. Severity Over Time – Malaria can become severe if untreated but usually shows improvement after proper drugs. Lassa fever worsens steadily and may lead to organ failure or death without early hospital care.

Hospital Tests for Proper Diagnosis

Since symptoms overlap, the only reliable way to confirm is through medical testing.

  • Malaria Tests – Rapid diagnostic tests and blood microscopy are affordable and widely available.
  • Lassa Fever Tests – Blood samples are sent to specialized labs, usually under government control. Results may take longer and cost more.

Cost Difference in Testing

  • Malaria Tests – ₦500 – ₦3,500 depending on type and hospital.
  • Lassa Fever Tests – ₦10,000 – ₦25,000 in private labs, often free in government-approved centers during outbreaks.

Why Misdiagnosis is Dangerous

Treating Lassa fever as malaria wastes critical time needed for antiviral drugs like Ribavirin. Many Nigerians only go to the hospital after trying several malaria treatments without success, which reduces their survival chances.

What Nigerians Should Do When Fever Persists

  • Get tested immediately instead of taking malaria drugs repeatedly.
  • Visit government hospitals where both malaria and Lassa fever tests can be conducted.
  • Pay attention to additional symptoms like sore throat, chest pain, and unexplained bleeding.
