ANAN Unveils Publications To Transform Accounting Education

The Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) has launched two landmark publications aimed at overhauling accounting education and improving financial reporting standards in the country.
The publications were presented by Professor Suleiman Aruwa, Chair of the Country Report on Accountancy Education and Financial Reporting Quality Award Panel, during ANAN’s 29th Annual Conference in Abuja.
The event, held at the ThisDay Dome, focused on the theme “Advancing Accounting Excellence in a Changing World.”
The first publication, titled Country Report on Accounting Education in Nigeria, provides a detailed assessment of the state of accounting education.
It identifies outdated curricula and underfunded institutions as major barriers to preparing students for emerging fields such as forensic accounting and financial technology.
The report warns that without modernising curricula, Nigeria’s accounting students risk being ill-equipped to tackle global financial challenges.
A lack of professional development opportunities for accounting educators was also highlighted, with recommendations calling for significant reforms.
The report suggests updating accounting programmes, offering industry partnerships for practical experience, and incorporating micro-credential programmes to better align education with real-world practices.
The second publication, National Financial Reporting Quality Award, focuses on raising the bar for financial reporting across the public and private sectors.
It aims to promote transparency by recognising organisations that demonstrate best practices in financial reporting.
The Federal Inland Revenue Service and MTN Nigeria PLC were awarded top honours in their respective public and private sector categories for financial transparency.
ANAN hopes these initiatives will drive significant improvements in both education and professional practice, strengthening Nigeria’s position in the global accounting landscape.
